In the wake of Uncle @louismarch.to passing anniversary, I am reminded of his word & reminder that I am more than just an artist but rather a visual griot and he is the one to call me an interstellar tree - in his own words "a bridge between our roots and the ancestral stars" 🌌

I&i heart& minds reflect on back to the time I brokered one of the most unique artist empowering agreements with a corporation that I know of. For the multi-year TTC Black History month campaign partnership with @astrosankofa I knew going in that there were 3 non-negotiable people who we wanted to highlight while they could enjoy their flowers: Elder Irma James, Dr. Itah Sadu and Uncle Louis " King Tut" March.

I am grateful & heart-filled know that Uncle Louis was a part of the campaign from the start & that I got to show him a draft artwork of him that I was considering to be on the 2025 campaign. It meant the world to see his tears of appreciation that he would be honoured before the city. It is also not lost on me that he also asked me at the time - why didnt you do it?... At the time I didnt want to admit that I was worried that my work wasnt good enough. So I told him I wanted to give young artist a chance. But as if being able to see through me - he reminded me that my work is only as great as I allow it be, but most importantly I am suppose to lead by example & if I am not willing to stand confidently behind my craft then why should I ask other to do so for theirs.
So working in collaboration with another artist I created 2 sculptures for of him one as King Tut his moniker & as Mr.Mover-For-Zero-Gun-Violence to go along side Ugonna's epic heroic depiction.

With his bus gaining the majority of the 40 million+ impressions the campaign had - it was important that his legacy and recognition for his work didnt stop at BHM month and after the opening of the park i too realized that my work in honouring our elders, the trailblazer of our community & the deserving ancestors also can not jump off the freedom train ride at that point.

So I give thanks to a mentor, a friend and spiritual relative in all the ways he has inspired me to be the greater version of i&I. Selah🙏🏾🕊

Congratulations, Claire Greenshaw and Christina Leslie! 🎉

Claire and Christina have been named 2026 Artist Prize Finalists by Toronto Friends of the Visual Arts (@TFVA.ca).

We’re excited to celebrate this alongside their work in our programming:
📸 Christina’s photographic work Pinhole 11 is currently on view on our South Façade Billboard, exploring memory, place, and intergenerational connection through her Jamaican heritage.
✏️ Claire will be featured in our upcoming group exhibition Colourful Parachutes, rethinking how contemporary art can be made, shared, and experienced in a hands-on gallery space.

Founded in 1998, Toronto Friends of the Visual Arts supports and celebrates artists shaping Toronto’s vibrant arts community. Claire and Christina’s recognition as 2026 Artist Prize Finalists is a notable testament to their vision and impact in contemporary art.
