It feels strangely moving to see Ripple Ripple Rippling finding a second home in Chiang Mai, as part of Monsoon School.

The project foregrounds the grannies in a village on the outskirts of Wuhan — how they gather, build, burn, plant, cook, worship, and live alongside the pinewoods. We have been coming back to this village for more than ten years, and Ripple has grown alongside our relationship with the community. Their lives are also part of a much larger story of China’s floating population: generations leaving for work, while the grannies remain, holding together everyday life and relationships to the land.

Seeing the work here, in a very different but somehow resonant context, feels less like Ripple has travelled somewhere new and more like it has found another place to settle for a while.

Alongside it is Tracing Sand — still very much an ongoing journey following sand, water, energy and infrastructures across Southeast Asia. It feels especially fitting to show this work-in-progress in Chiang Mai, close to the Mekong and to many of the landscapes that keep pulling us back.

[Swipe left for English] กว่าเราจะได้สัมผัสสายฝนของฤดูมรสุมอย่างจริงจัง ก็เข้าสู่วันที่หกของ Monsoon School #1 แล้ว!

เราเริ่มต้นโปรแกรมครึ่งหลังด้วยการทบทวนสิ่งเกิดขึ้นใน 5 วันแรก จากนั้นจึงเริ่มฝึกฝนผ่านกิจกรรมที่ท้าทายจาก Exutoire: a table for a site ว่าด้วยเรื่องของ “โต๊ะ” ที่ทำอะไรได้บ้าง สร้างขึ้นจากอะไรได้บ้าง เราจะทำอะไรกับมันได้บ้าง และเราจะลงมือสร้างมันขึ้นมาอย่างไร คำถามเหล่านี้เปิดโอกาสให้เราได้ปลดปล่อยตนเองจากสมมติฐานเดิม ๆ เกี่ยวกับความหมายและความเป็นไปได้ของ “โต๊ะ”

ทุกคนเสนอจินตนาการและความเป็นไปได้ที่มีต่อ “โต๊ะ” ได้อย่างเท่าเทียม ก่อนจะขมวดไอเดียต่าง ๆ ให้สอดคล้องกับข้อจำกัดด้านเวลาและทรัพยากรที่มีอยู่ และสามารถหาข้อสรุปร่วมกันได้ในท้ายที่สุด
ในวันต่อมา เราจึงกระจายตัวออกทั่วเมืองเชียงใหม่เพื่อตามหาไม้เก่าและเศษผ้าคงคลังที่เปื้อนโคลนจากเหตุการณ์น้ำท่วม ณ ตลาดวโรรส วัสดุอันเปี่ยมไปด้วยร่องรอยของกระแสน้ำและสายธารแห่งการค้าขายที่เคยหล่อเลี้ยงและก่อรูปเมืองเชียงใหม่มาอย่างยาวนาน

Sher Maker ได้เปิดสตูดิโอในอำเภอหางดงเพื่อต้อนรับพวกเราอย่างอบอุ่น กลุ่มทำงานไม้ได้เรียนรู้เทคนิคงานไม้เบื้องต้นจากช่างฝีมือ พร้อมทำความเข้าใจวัฒนธรรมและประวัติศาสตร์ที่ฝังตัวอยู่ในตัววัสดุ ขณะเดียวกัน กลุ่มทำผ้าได้ทำงานร่วมกับ "ป้านงค์" และ "ป้าแสง" ผู้เข้ามาช่วยตัดเย็บผ้าเปื้อนคราบน้ำท่วมตามเค้าโครงที่กลุ่มได้ออกแบบไว้ กิจกรรมนี้ทำให้เราได้ทำงานร่วมกัน เรียนรู้ที่จะถอยคนละก้าว ประนีประนอม ต่อรอง และตระหนักถึงสิ่งที่แต่ละคนสามารถทำได้เพื่อเกื้อหนุนกันและกัน

กระบวนการนี้ได้นำคำถามตั้งต้นของ Monsoon School #1 ไปสู่การลงมือปฏิบัติจริง: พื้นที่ (site) สามารถสอนให้เราเรียนรู้ว่าควรสร้างอะไร สร้างอย่างไร และทำงานร่วมกันอย่างไรได้บ้าง โต๊ะที่ถูกก่อรูปขึ้นจากวัสดุ ประวัติศาสตร์ ทรัพยากร ข้อจำกัด และสายสัมพันธ์ที่พวกเราได้ประสบ พบเจอ จึงไม่ได้เป็นเพียงร่องรอยที่หลงเหลือไว้จากโปรแกรมนี้เท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นข้อเสนอถึงแนวทางในการเข้ามาใช้งานและเติมชีวิตให้แก่พื้นที่แห่งนี้ต่อไปในอนาคต

ร่องรอยของ Monsoon School #1 จะยังจัดวางไว้ในพื้นที่แห่งนี้ และจะเปิดให้บุคคลทั่วไปเข้ามาใช้งานในฐานะพื้นที่ส่วนรวมไปจนถึงสิ้นเดือนตุลาคม 2569 ณ deCentral เชียงใหม่ เราขอเชิญทุกท่านเข้ามาร่วมใช้เวลา ณ พื้นที่แห่งนี้ร่วมกัน

It is my honor and pleasure to participate in Monsoon School 1: Site as Method.

During the program, I was able to open new doors in thinking about site-specific art projects, especially in relation to my current MFA research project.

Alongside the insightful sharing sessions led by our facilitators, I learned so much from each of the participants through sharing experiences, exchanging ideas, and learning from one another. The openness, care, and generosity within the group made this experience especially meaningful for me.

I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of this wonderful learning experience and to share this journey with such thoughtful artists and participants.

[Swipe left for English] Monsoon School #1: Site as Method จบลงไปแล้วเมื่อวันอาทิตย์ที่ผ่านมา พร้อมกิจกรรม Open Studios ปิดท้าย เป็นช่วงเวลา 10 วันที่สร้างแรงบันดาลใจ ระหว่างบทสนทนาที่ยืดยาว มื้ออาหารที่ได้ร่วมแบ่งปัน การทดลองร่วมกัน และคำถามยาก ๆ มิตรภาพในชุมชนเล็ก ๆ แห่งนี้ค่อย ๆ ก่อตัวขึ้นในกลุ่มผู้ปฏิบัติงานสร้างสรรค์ที่มาจากทั้งประเทศไทย เอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ และประเทศจีน

Monsoon School #1 เป็นรูปเป็นร่างขึ้นจากการพบปะแลกเปลี่ยนกับกลุ่มผู้ปฏิบัติงานสร้างสรรค์อิสระทั่วประเทศไทย โดยก่อตัวขึ้นบนคำถามที่ว่าพื้นที่จะกลายมาเป็นบ่อเกิดแห่งความรู้ได้อย่างไร และความรู้นั้นจะเข้ามารื้อและสร้างรูปแบบการทำงานใหม่ได้อย่างไร ใน 5 วันแรก กิจกรรม Open Studios นำโดย NOIR ROW ART SPACE, LIR และ field-0 ได้นำเสนอการบรรยายควบคู่กับคลินิกให้คำปรึกษา การฝึกปฏิบัติ และการตั้งคำถามร่วมกัน เราได้เดินทางผ่านพื้นที่อันหลากหลาย เริ่มจากอุดรธานี สู่การสร้างสถาบันในกาลิอูรังซึ่งยังคงเคลื่อนที่ และร้อยรัดอยู่กับวัฏจักรการปะทุของภูเขาไฟเมอราปี; ไปจนถึงหมู่บ้านแห่งหนึ่งในอู่ฮั่น ที่ซึ่งสังคมผู้สูงวัยดำรงอยู่ท่ามกลางความสูญหาย และสายสัมพันธ์ถูกถักทอขึ้นจากการย้ายถิ่นฐาน ขณะที่ครึ่งหลังซึ่งนำกระบวนการโดย Exutoire ร่วมกับ Sher Maker Studio มุ่งเน้นไปที่การสร้างสรรค์ร่วมกันและการลงมือทำ โดยมี Monsoon School เป็นพื้นที่ทดลอง

ในห้องเรียนที่เต็มไปด้วยความหลากหลาย แม้แต่ความหมายของคำว่า “พื้นที่” ก็ยังปฏิเสธที่จะหยุดนิ่งอยู่กับที่ เราขบคิดและถกเถียงกันในเรื่องของตำแหน่งแห่งที่ การสัมผัสรับรู้ การทำงานร่วมกับชุมชน ภาษาที่ใช้ถักทอความสัมพันธ์เหล่านั้น รวมถึงสิทธิในการคงไว้ซึ่งความไม่โปร่งใส เราเดินทางมายัง Monsoon School พร้อมคำถามมากมาย และกลับออกไปพร้อมคำถามที่ยิ่งทวีคูณ

ภูวาพาเดินเมืองยามค่ำกับโรงเรียนมรสุม ดีเซ็นทรัล! - Phuwa’s City Walk with #MonsoonSchool 01 @decentral_official : From the Sriphum Corner of Chiang Mai’s Old City (1296) to Jing Jai Market (2012), we walked along Atsadathorn Road (1982), tracing unconnected paths, untold contours, and forgotten stories embedded within the city. This city walk was an invitation to look again, to uncover what has been hidden, reconnect what has been fragmented, and listen to the stories that still live within the urban landscape.

Happy to meet everyone in this program! It was very fun evening with all of you! Thank you for your art pieces to keep our journey graphically & collectively! 🙌🏽🤎🙌🏽😀
