A small crew from Crestone spent the weekend at the Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute getting our minds blown about the extent of what’s possible when it comes to food security, soil regeneration, and the magic of permaculture.

Big thanks to Jerome Osentowski and everyone at @crmpi for their generosity, hospitality and inspiration. 🌱🌀

This myth just won’t die…

I made a reel recently on the evolutionary function of menopause, and found the comment section full of some version of “But how does that make sense if humans only lived to be 40??”

This is a myth, and it’s not just untrue, it is actively perpetuated by those who’d like us to believe that this is as good as it gets for humans… the same people who profit off of our poor physical and mental health.

The issue is an intentional conflation of average life expectancy with lifespan, which then gets passed around unknowingly by the public when they want to bash ancestral practices or Paleo diets.

Life expectancy is a statistical average, and is skewed by high infant mortality rates (which evidence suggests may have been intentional at times to keep populations at sustainable numbers - sad, but true). Lifespan is the actual or potential length of an individual’s life. So while the average life expectancy may have been 35, those who made it past infancy commonly lived to be between 60-90 years old and in good health.

After we transitioned from hunter gatherer to agricultural lifestyle, the abundance of nutrient-poor food allowed more infants to survive to adulthood, but actually led to a decrease in overall health (including height). This raised the average life expectancy moderately but it wasn’t until the past 100+ years that modern medicine brought our life expectancy to where it is now by even further improving infant mortality rates and artificially keeping people alive into old age.

This myth is nothing more than a statistical misrepresentation perpetuated by those who want us to believe that we are living the good life thanks to the products they sell. Yet, we can all feel that this is not true. We’re less healthy, more stressed, more depressed than ever, with higher rates of chronic disease and suicide than ever before.

It’s time to return to our roots… a long life, full of meaningful social connection and community, connection with nature, and female wisdom-keepers and leaders (the evolutionary function of menopause). That life is your birthright.
