Today is James Bond Day. It’s the anniversary of Dr. No’s premiere on October 5, 1962, when Sean Connery first stepped onto the screen and the modern spy thriller, as we know it, began.

Ian Fleming didn’t just write a spy; he built an archetype. Style. Class. The kind of adventure that made the world feel larger, sharper, and more dangerous all at once. Every writer in this genre is working in his shadow, whether they admit it or not.

Maybe literary spies are an echo of that same idea, that a person can be pulled into a world bigger than themselves and have to decide, in real time, who they’re going to be inside it.

I’ve been doing the Bond Report for coming up on my 5 year anniversary in January. I’ve engaged with many people in the Bond Community. Hell you and I may have met, had good conversation and even made some fun memories together. But for me…Raymond Benson has always held a special place for me in this fandom. Not only got my ADHD brain to start reading for leisure as a young man, but also showed me that there is an entirely new world of adventure between the two covers. I got excited to read vs dreading it. And you might be just like me and thinking, “I’m not really into reading, but I’ll read a Bond Book” or maybe you already love reading and just really appreciate the adventures that Raymond was able to craft across 2 trilogies and 7 main stories books.

So I say all that to say, Meeting the man himself in person last night was one of those “pinch me, how did I even get here” moments in my life that I will never forget. People say you never meet your hero’s, but im here to tell you that if ever given the opportunity you should meet Raymond Benson.
