Hunger can be tricky. 🤯

Logically, we know it’s a sign that our bodies need nourishment. Simple, right?

Not so much. Psychologically, hunger can be associated with having needs, which can make us feel uncomfortable. If having needs equates being “needy” then hungering for food or anything else is scary.

Also, so much of our language connects hunger with longing and yearning.

Hungry for love. Starving for attention.

What are you REALLY hungry for?

In this episode of Fearlessly Authentic with psychoanalyst, author, and radio host, @dr.nina.psychoanalyst, a globally recognized expert in the field of eating disorders who has written four books and 15 articles on the subject.

Dr Nina and I discussed how she uncovers the emotional layers which are at the root of eating disorders, and what her research has shown about the types of food people choose to eat.

We also discussed the ‘When-Then Trap’ of when I do this, then this will happen; when I lose weight, then I’ll get the job I want, or the significant other I want, for example.

Dr Nina is hosts The Dr. Nina Show: Outsmart Emotional Eating on L.A. Talk Radio and The Binge Cure with Dr. Nina on VoiceAmerica. She founded The Binge Cure method and is dedicated to helping people worldwide overcome binge eating and heal their relationship with food.

‘It’s not what you’re eating that’s the true problem, it’s what’s eating at you.’ Dr Nina

Do you ever feel “fat”?

😔Feeling “fat” can be a way for us to express feelings of anger, anxiety, and stress. By focusing on our body and appearance, we distract ourselves from that deeper emotional pain.

Instead, consider what’s going on. Maybe your feelings are too big. It’s easier to feel too big than to grapple with outsize emotions.

The good news is that by cracking the code and identifying the true triggers, you can create change.

Same for other expressions like, “I’m so full it hurts” or, “My clothes are uncomfortable” and more. 👗🙁

👀🔎If you’re curious about what’s going on beneath the surface of those expressions, read the rest of the article on my blog.

You binge eat…but do you actually know WHY? 🤔

❌No it’s not you’re “addiction to food.”
It actually has nothing to do with food at all.

For years, I believed that having a "perfect" body was the key to a perfect life. 😔💪👗 But the truth is, chasing the perfect body only led me down a path of self-destruction and misery. 😭😢

Later, I became a therapist because I wanted to help other people stop their obsession and the madness about food, weight, and body image.

Now, I helped people change by processing what’s eating “at” them instead of focusing on what they are eating. 🍽️🧠

It's time to break free from the idea that a perfect body equals a perfect life. 🚫💯 Let's embrace self-love and self-acceptance and know that your worth is so much more than what you see in the mirror. ❤️🌟

People who struggle with food often describe themselves as “broken” and think there’s something wrong with them. They aren't broken. 😊

They're just stuck. You learned this relationship with food and yourself. You can unlearn that and create a whole new way of being in the world. 💪🌍

Whatever is going on with food is something you're DOING, not something that you ARE. 👍

You're not your behavior. (You may also drive a car but that doesn't make you a car). 🚗

You're a person who learned a way of coping that both helps and hurts. The good news is, you can find new ways of coping and say goodbye to bingeing, stress eating, or emotional eating for good. 🎉

Tell me, how will you start thinking differently starting today? 🤔

👩‍👧❤️Our relationship with our mothers has a huge impact on how we see ourselves and also affects our relationship with food. If we are raised in an environment with a nurturing and supportive mother, we're more likely to have a positive self-image and a healthy relationship with food.

However, if our mothers are controlling or overly critical, that can lead to a negative self-image and disordered eating habits. After all, on some level food equals mothering and nurturing.

It's essential to recognize the impact that our mothering experience has had on our relationship with food and ourselves. By becoming more aware of these patterns, we can start to make changes that will lead to a healthier relationship with food and a more positive self-image.

Identifying the type of mother you had can help you better understand yourself, and illuminate a path to creating change.
