I’m so excited to have a drawing in Counter Balance, celebrating the end of @jackolivermackness incredible residency, alongside @johnsey_art_ramble . There will be beautiful wood doing cool things, and art that moves!! We will be having our Private view at 6pm - 8pm @the.drawing.shop in Hillsborough this Wednesday 21st of October. We will also be open Thursday & Friday this week (1 - 5pm) & Saturday (10am - 1pm). Come say hi!! ✨ All made possible by @hyphastudios ✨

“That’s not a drawing!” 🤨 Given that we talk a LOT about drawing, it’s perhaps understandable that people sometimes question why we run events that don’t always use traditional drawing materials or techniques. But here’s the thing (and sorry if it’s controversial!) when we say drawing, we mean it in its absolute broadest sense. We love drawing with pens and pencils, but we also love drawing with brushes, scissors, tape, thread... the list goes on!! The Big Draw Festival is a worldwide celebration of drawing and mark-making, and our Big Draw Organisers run a huge range of events, many exploring traditional drawing methods, and others exploring more experimental approaches. We’re extending the exhibition! 🎉 We’re suepr excited to announce that The BIG School Takeover will now be open for a little longer! 🫟 After such a brilliant response to the work, we’ve decided to keep the doors open and give even more people the chance to experience the imagination, creativity and unique voices of more than 180 young artists from 5 Sheffield schools. Ballet to me is beauty and pain, regimental but light past and present time and memory. I was standing in front of the canvas and I remembered a childhood friend. I am not sure what happen to her but she had an amputated leg and was fitted with an artificial leg. And at that very moment I was struck thinking what was her dreams, what did she wanted to do? Did she feel other? And how could I have helped or hindered her dreams. But we were young from the kassie with no access to ballett. So instead I painted her “Onse Kind”

Hello ❤️ It's been a while!! Since the start of March i knew I was heading for a major burnout, but I thought i could just push through. Get birthdays, days out, creative projects, diy projects, easter holidays and various other things out of the way first, then breathe... Well that didn't quite work out and my body tried quite a few times to slow me down, threw a few 'alarm bells' at me, but i just snoozed them and kept pushing on. Until a few weeks ago my body finally said 'enough is enough!' It started shutting down in subtle ways at first, but when I lost the ability to even hold a pen, draw or write my own name I knew something definitely wasn't right! After my vision declining rapidly, ending up with a suspicious lump on my eyeball, then finding out both ears were infected the day after, and having multiple back to back panic attacks, I ended up in A&E, but all the physical issues were overlooked and they only focused on my mental health, and after hours waiting, was then admitted to a Decisions unit for 'respite', which turned into 5 days of the complete opposite and ended with me being sent back to A&E with suspected heart attack! Fortunately it wasn't, it was just an extreme panic attack! Various tests & screenings initially put it all down to 'chronic migraines caused by stress & anxiety' and i was sent away with medication and an 'urgent' outpatient MRI referral. Frustrating, confusing, but some sort of answer i guess... After the hospital i took myself over to the drawing shop to do some painting to take my mind off of things, and intended to go back a few days later to finish... But that night I kept waking up with a vile taste in my mouth and numb/tingly patches all over then gradually lost the use of the entire left side of my body and ended up rushed to A&E with a suspected stroke! After hours of waiting, CT scan, blood tests, and being transferred to the neurology unit at a different hospital, I was told I had FND (Functional Neurological Disorder) also triggered by...you guessed it...stress & anxiety! It's now been just over 3 weeks since I was last at home (though it feels like a lifetime!) And the hospital is my current 'home' while

Great piece in @nowthenmag about the wonderful things happening at The Old Wilkos in Hillsborough, including our exhibition (check out my stories and follow their link, they've also got a lovely piece on @pauliepaul55 and his exhibition that's on too). Our exhibition is on until the 27th of this month and is free. I'm plugging it again. But the whole space is a refuge for creative people and an invaluable community hub, and is open beyond the close of our exhibition. After reading the article in @nowthenmag it made me a bit emotional. Charities like @hyphastudios that make this possible. The volunteers at @the.drawing.shop and the people like Johnsey behind it. You can't put a price on the positive effect this has had, not just in Hillsborough but further afield. I can only speak for myself here, but the effect it's had on me is huge. It's given me a space to experiment with my practice, meet new people, immerse myself in creativity and hope and inspiration. When the world is raging outside, this cannot be underestimated. As someone who struggles with their health, this is even more important. And I know, given my circumstances, that I simply wouldn't be able to afford my own space. So thank you to @hyphastudios for your accessibility, to Johnsey and @the.drawing.shop for making it what it is and inviting me into it, to @adam_galliford_photography for capturing the personality of our space, to @nowthenmag for shouting about it, to Sheffield Council for having the vision to see beyond an empty unit, to all the fellow studio holders and members of the public who come in and make it such a lovely, welcoming space. You've made this fish out of water very happy. (I designed this leaflet with the collaboration of the other fab studio holders. There's 3 designs in total. Some installation pictures of the group show ‘Living Memory’, curated by me, @jackolivermackness and @johnsey_art_ramble, and made possible thanks to the help of many others. The exhibition, featuring work by 21 local artists, continues until the 27th of June, in the Old Wilkos on Hillsborough Corner. Find the gallery space up the escalator above @the.drawing.shop. I really enjoyed building this exhibition: it has been a wonderful and challenging project and I am proud of what we have done with it.
