I left Armadillo with dust still stuck in my teeth and a stupid hope in my chest that maybe quiet was a place you could ride to..

Deathwing moved slow under me, old bones carrying old bones..

Off the trail, a camp that wasn’t a camp no more, just canvas ripped open like a gutted deer and two bodies face down in the dirt, pockets turned inside out..

some bastards idea of honest work.

same damn story, different zip code..

I stood there with my hand on Deathwing’s neck, staring at those empty hands reaching for nothing.. and that old familiar weight settled back in my chest. That feeling like peace is just a word rich folks invented to sell land.. the country don’t want peace but debt paid in lead and leather.

If I wanted a place to finally settle, I reckoned, I’d have to crave it out myself..

..and craving takes work..

The dust hadn't settled since I hit Armadillo, it just learned to live in my lungs..

This place was exactly what they said it was: a town coughing itself to death, too stubborn to lay down..

..too much like me.

I didn't look back at the piano, at the blood I didn't spill but didn't stop either.

"Blackwater," I muttered, not to the horse, but to whatever was left listening.

It was a long ride north through Thieves' Landing, the kind of ride where a man either finds a reason to keep going..

.. or finally finds a good enough place to stop.
