Hey, @edmontonoilers @nhl - this is probably not my usual form of advocacy, I admit

It’s probably not the most impactful form of advocacy, either

Commenting statistics and peer-reviewed research on a hockey team’s Instagram post may not exactly be the advocacy hill I’d normally choose to die on. And I bet they’ll probably delete my comments

But sometimes I think about what happens when winning becomes the only thing that matters

When the focus is so heavily on the scoreboard, the roster, the next season, the championship 🏆 that we stop asking what our decisions communicate to the women and survivors watching…….

And obviously I’m not commenting because I think an Instagram comment is going to change an organization

I’m commenting because I think silence can communicate something too

And maybe this isn’t the most strategic way to advocate. Maybe it isn’t the most productive. Maybe it is a little petty

But I also know that as a therapist, I spend a lot of time talking about the impact of sexual violence on women, clients I care about, and I don’t want that conversation to stop simply because it’s uncomfortable, inconvenient, or happening in a space where everyone would rather talk about hockey!!!!

Winning matters….But so do the people who are watching

And maybe we don’t have to choose between caring about the sport and caring about survivors?

Women have always been healers and they have always been harmed for that. In many US states doctors are not safe performing life saving treatments for mothers because of strict abortion laws regardless of what science says.

My example is just one in an infinite list of them.

We need men to question their own behaviours because I can guarantee you the entire hockey team would tell you to your face that they believe women deserve equal treatment. JUST LIKE WE WOULD.

So if we’re outwardly the same as the men in that video then we very likely hold beliefs the same as them. Conscious or unconscious, those biases likely exist and we need to confront them on an individual level.
