Working on a little figurative vase in the studio. There’s something meditative about coil building forms.

The ceramic process from start to finish ✨ Shown here was the final batch of custom tea cups commissioned by a No Longer Human — an offline social tea house in Evanston, IL.

This video may look aesthetic, but capturing every step was a whole project in and of itself. Naturally, I missed some parts, but this video pretty much sums up how a ceramic piece goes from a lump of clay to something you can hold, put flowers in, or drink out of.

I made this video to help non-ceramic people visualize the process of making ceramics on the wheel. But in some way, I want to remind you of the hobbies you used to do by hand that brought you joy, and how every part of that process was a capsule of time in which you were just happy to be making something — anything.

I love making. As long as I breathe, I will be making something with my hands.

If you’re near Chicago, you can visit No Longer Human and drink from these, along with the others from the collection. They are a joy to hold! 🫰🏽

Fun fact: Capturing this process for myself was, in a way, a full-circle moment. In 2014, I shadowed a fellow Chicago potter named, Anne E. Terpstra. This was a few months before starting my own pottery journey, and we created a process video of Anne making a line of custom ceramic vases for a local shop. Making that video, well before I ever touched clay, instilled in me a level of respect for handmade ceramics I wouldn’t have found elsewhere.

Now, a little over 2 years later, I made this for myself as a reminder to enjoy the process and invest in the discipline required to make something worth holding.

We’ve landed in New York! 🗽 I found an incredible new clay studio in the Upper East Side @the.pottery.studio—flooded with natural light, open space, and fresh surfaces ready to be worked in.

With Cone 6 as my limit, I’m experimenting with new clays. Currently testing Standard 240 White and planning to try 266 Umbria next. Would love your suggestions: what’s your go-to porcelain clay that fires beautifully at Cone 6 with a bright, translucent finish?

@wearehadeem and I have been dreaming up this collaboration for years… I’m so proud to say… that famous babka will be sharing the table with my reclaim plates!

Designed to resemble the beautiful cinnamon, chocolate swirl, these plates are so excited to find a home with your favorite Hadeem dessert!
