A little love and appreciation to Tazy Phyllipz of the Ska Parade radio show! Tazy and his brother Albino Brown started the Ska Parade on KUCI in Irvine, CA in 1989 and, apart from little things like, oh I dunno, breaking small unknown bands like Sublime and No Doubt to the world, he also featured, and would often have perfom live on the radio, many of the traditional ska bands we loved here in the Los Angeles scene. The show was eventually picked up by X103.9 in the Inland Empire during the height of the third wave explosion. They also released a fantastic documentary (you might be able to see clips on YouTube?) capturing the late 80s/early 90s California ska scene with performances and interviews with bands like Let’s Go Bowling, Jump With Joey, The Donkey Show, and The Skeletones. It’s essential viewing. There were also the comprehensive and fun compilation albums like Step On It and Runnin’ Naked Thru The Cornfield as well as reissuing the catalog of 80s San Diego band The Donkey Show.
37 years later and Tazy and the Ska Parade are still on the air! Every Sunday on dirtyradio.fm!
Thanks for all you have done for this scene over the years, Tazy!

Now this was quite the ska lineup!

Goldenvoice presented this stacked night of ska in the early ’90s at the Reseda Country Club, featuring The Toasters, The Skeletones, Let’s Go Bowling, Dance Hall Crashers, The Specs, and more.

Were you there? Who do you remember seeing?

Long before Extreme Thing became a Las Vegas tradition, we were already bringing together action sports, music and alternative culture in a way that was unlike anything else in town.

Here’s a serious throwback to Extreme Thing feat Ska Summit, held at Desert Breeze Skate Park on March 29, 2003 — a day that became part of the incredible history of Extreme Thing Sports & Music Festival.

The lineup was absolutely stacked: Reel Big Fish, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Save Ferris, Fishbone, The Toasters, The Selecter, Mustard Plug, The Specials, Buck-O-Nine and a whole lot more.

Add SKATE, BMX, DJ and breakdancing competitions, and you had the perfect recipe for an unforgettable day in Las Vegas.

Looking back at these old posters brings back memories of just how wild, creative and unapologetically different those early Extreme Thing years were.
