Soul Care 🤲🏾

One of the last conversations I had with @free.radicle was about my commitment to hold space for spiritual sessions at the 4C on Parsons Ave. Now in partnership with the team at @the4cgallery I’m grateful to finally fulfill that commitment. These are times where spiritual spaces should come with a measurement of trust, and I don’t take it lightly. This is also an exercise in vulnerability for me as well since I haven’t led spaces like these in a long time.

Justice is a meditation in not only how we care for the world around us, but how we care for ourselves. I’m carrying sentiments about the state of our times that I’m not sure should take up room in my nervous system. There are also reasons to acknowledge the harms being done when the religious institutions we rely on are staying silent. I’d love to share space with those who are leaning in these directions. There is healing and there is rest.

Next Sunday we explore this together. Bring your curiosity, bring levity, bring an open mind. Let’s just commit to be present 🤲🏾

“Chess is a Dance Floor”

I was inspired by wellness, and how we relieve stress from our body-through movement. Chess has beneficial properties, along with dancing. I wanted to capture the rhythmic moves that exist within the very pieces in “the game”. I chose the represent two queens leaving their roles as defenders and protectors, for a night out ✨

On view now until the board of 2026 resets December 31!! You can also attend chess programming on 2nd and 4th Sundays to view as well!

The Royal Oak Initiative invites you to celebrate National Chess Day with us!

Opening 10/10, Peace by Piece is a mixed-media exhibition exploring chess as more than a game — as a cultural language, a visual vocabulary, a historical artifact, and a space for strategy, identity, creativity, connection, and imagination!

For centuries, chess has moved across borders, generations, and cultures. Its pieces, patterns, players, rituals, and histories have inspired artists, thinkers, designers, activists, and storytellers. Peace by Piece invites artists to consider what chess means to us today — and what it might mean tomorrow.

We at ROI see the connection between chess and art as a way to exercise the left and right brain. Critical and creative thought. The gallery started from the mind of a child with Kween’s first art show in 2025 and now with this show we will have had a full year of art programming thanks to @terriseta and @9__________a !

We are super passionate about the power of representation in books, particularly for young people. There is so much beauty in not only seeing yourself reflected in stories and history but also in having windows into others’ experiences.

In addition to a wide selection of books for 0-18 centering cultural diversity, neurodiversity and disability, we’ll also have:

Cyanotype Workshop at The 4C this weekend instructed by Ky Smiley! Cyanotype is an alternative camera-less printing process that produces a cyan-blue print.
For Saturdays Beginner friendly course (ages 10+), participants are encouraged to bring objects that they can create an image with.
For Sundays Intermediate course (ages 14+), participants will bring an image that will be converted into a digital negative and then printed a t-shirt and fine art paper.

Here at Rooted Books, we LOVE kidlit! From cute little board books to middle-grade graphic novels and YA fantasy, we are here for it!

Since we love it so much, we HAD to host a Kid Lit Celebration! On October 3 from 10 to 2 PM, we will be @the4cgallery with:

•kids’ arts and crafts stations
•special story time
•and of course, books for kids of all ages and those who love children’s lit.

Me? Instructing? Well, yes!

I was asked by the lovely curators of the @the4cgallery, Terri and Nina, to lead a cyanotype workshop as part of programming for the group exhibition currently on view, “Kind of Blue,” honoring Miles Davis’s sonically transformative release of the album by the same name.

I’m grateful to share a process I was able to assist with in a different space but back with my community in the space I’ve been working passionately in for a year as exhibition preparator.

We’ll be having two sessions, one centered on the vast potential of cyanotypes with various objects and their impressions on coated paper, and in the next we will focus on incorporating imagery and will print off your images as digital negatives for participants to explore with.
