Jiu Jitsu in America had humble beginnings. The local blue belt was often the best and closest authority. The latest DVD instructional was coveted alpha wisdom. Any flat surface, indoor or outdoor, was trainable if you had enough puzzle mats.

Last month, PBJJ had the pleasure of joining West Windsor PD’s National Night Out. Our patchwork of puzzle mats and gymnastics pads became a showcase for the art. Curious onlookers, and a handful of challengers, were drawn to the strange spectacle of grapplers practicing their craft in the open.

The night was a reminder that Jiu Jitsu doesn’t need to be so precious. All it asks of us are some mats, the drive to train, and a lot of heart.

We are always training.

@xtinariaa is the artist who created the artwork for the story time poster.

I had reached to Christina and asked, “Can you take this picture of me and my friend @the_bfoss and turn it into a Metallica album cover for an album called “Middle Aged Grapplers?” She did an incredible job with something so silly.

You can reach out to her for artwork ideas as well on Instagram.

Thank you Christina! This made me laugh a lot.

A favorite moment from last April was a competition at the Marple Sports Arena.

Training took a little over 2 months.
3 - 4 classes a week was what I could do.

Besides the time on the mat, coaching sessions with @jhannan86 were invaluable. His humble and focused approach to coaching opened up how I was learning and gave me the room to just trust myself.

Private sessions with @collin_rudolph allowed me to focus in on what movements were gelling with me. He’s an encyclopedia and you walk away better having worked with him.

@the_bfoss would generously meet up with me at 5:30 to put in work before the 6am class. @nick_tall1 would push us during class to make a 5 minute round feel like nothing compared to the pace he set in his class.

The car ride to the competition was filled with jokes, strategy, and sandwiches from Hoagie Haven.

@ransommelvin helped me warm up.

@lahg_blackmonn offered to hold on to my gear.

@wakaflakashane coached me during the match. He gave me space to feels things out and then delivered the clearest coaching instructions that would adapt and move as the match went on.

@kaestagram kindly came out to cheer me on and @strieu_42 fought like a champ.

The team at @princetonbjj all had a hand in getting me ready. Even though I was the one stepping on the mat, I didn’t feel alone.

At the end of all of it, a prom picture felt right.

I’ve been recovering from a concussion that I got from a different comp in September and finally am starting to feel like myself thanks to the team at @atlanticptcenter . Looking forward to getting back on the mat.

A bit conflicted… do we change the name to blue belt problems, pass the torch to another white belt or just keep the memes rolling?
Sound off in the comments.
