Day 30/40 of our fast 🎉
Today we’re studying 1 Timothy 1–3.

Paul gets to write to individuals now, yayyy!

The first thing I noticed was that Paul could give Timothy clear-cut instructions.

Paul also mentioned that the law was not made for those who have right standing with God, but for the lawless.
We’ve been justified by faith.
We are no longer subject to the law.

Key things Paul admonished Timothy on:
Prayers should be offered continually for all men so they can experience the light of God.
Paul also gave essential attributes for someone to be a bishop. He gave these instructions for the people Timothy was pastoring.

Since people emulate the values of their leaders, Paul set expectations for anyone who would be in a position of authority.

The fact that Paul wrote ahead to Timothy and mentioned that he might be detained and might not be able to come shows the reckless abandon he lived with for Christ.

“And great and important and weighty, we confess, is the hidden truth (the mystic secret) of godliness. He [God] was made visible in human flesh, justified and vindicated in the [Holy] Spirit, was seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, [and] taken up in glory.”
‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬ ‭AMPC‬‬

The mystery of God has been revealed to us through the person of Christ. And that’s on period. All we need to do is to access it through the knowledge of God’s word.

How tithes and offerings are feeding Pastors😅

I grew up as a pastor’s kid, and now I’m privileged to serve in church and see the inner workings of ministry. I can tell you for free that offerings and tithes CANNOT feed pastors.

Growing up, I can’t count the number of people who lived in our house. Even till now, the number of visitors we consistently host and feed daily is countless. I can’t calculate the school fees and house rent my parents paid, or the foodstuffs they bought for other families. Even when church members brought things to our house, more than half was given out. Is it our clothes, my siblings and I? Our school books? Our shoes?

I cannot forget how much we gave during the 2020 lockdown because people kept calling us. There is no church project my parents were not among the biggest givers in. And this is an Orthodox Church, where pastors are paid stipends and do not really have access to church finances. Yet, WE LACKED NOTHING. Everything we desired, God gave us. Traveling? Great schools on scholarships? God is faithful.

Now I’m older and I serve in church. I know how much comes in through tithes and offerings. I also see how much pastors give and how often they are the biggest givers in projects. Again, offerings and tithes cannot carry the needs of pastors.

But what if that’s what pastors are eating? Why is that an issue?

Today’s reading was profound, especially 1 Corinthians 9:13–14: “Do you not know that those who are employed in the services of the temple get their food from the temple? And that those who tend the altar share in the offerings brought? On the same principle, the Lord directed that those who publish the Gospel should live by the Gospel.”

Why shouldn’t pastors enjoy from where they serve? Didn’t the Levites eat from the temple? Ministry is already sacrifice. Why should money be such a big deal?
If Scripture is our standard, why should believers have an issue with pastors having access to their offerings?
