Winning an election doesn’t automatically make you a leader. Being well liked, sharing a few beers, and getting along with everyone are great qualities, but they won’t make the tough decisions for you when things go sideways. If you’re going to accept the responsibility of leading firefighters, you owe it to them to keep improving. Read a book, attend a class, listen to a podcast, study tactics, or learn from those around you. Whatever it is, never stop learning. Nobody expects you to know everything, but your firefighters deserve someone who’s willing to put in the work. Be a good person, be approachable, and enjoy the brotherhood, but remember, popularity might win you an election, preparation earns you the right to lead. #RaiseTheStandard

The firefighter mindset goes beyond the fireground. It’s about thinking ahead, staying composed under pressure, looking out for your crew, and constantly pushing yourself to improve. These traits aren’t developed overnight. They’re built through training, experience, discipline, and dedication. Nobody is perfect, but there’s always room to be better than you were yesterday. The standard you set for yourself matters.

Just because you’re driving the truck doesn’t mean your responsibilities begin and end at the turntable. The truck company chauffeur plays a critical role in fireground operations. Proper apparatus positioning, setting up the aerial, and ensuring the equipment is ready for use are all priorities. But once those responsibilities are addressed, what’s next? Depending on staffing, apparatus capabilities, and fireground conditions, the chauffeur may be in a position to assist with additional outside truck company functions. Throwing ground ladders, assisting with exterior ventilation when coordinated with fire attack, improving access and egress, or helping establish a secondary means of escape are all tasks that can make a difference. The key is understanding your assignment and knowing when you’re needed at the apparatus. If the aerial is operating or conditions require someone at the controls, that’s where you belong. But when the situation allows, don’t overlook opportunities to contribute. A good truck company chauffeur knows their apparatus. A great one also understands the bigger picture of the fireground. Train your chauffeurs to be more than just drivers. Teach them apparatus placement, building access, laddering priorities, and how their actions support the overall operation. Don’t just drive the truck. Be part of the truck company. #raisethestandard

Back to the Basics For those of us who have been around the fire service for a while, the Fire Triangle is about as basic as it gets: heat, fuel, and oxygen. Take one away, and the fire goes out. But remember, what seems basic to us may be brand new to the probie standing next to us. New firefighters are being introduced to an entirely new world. Fire behavior, hose lines, ladders, tools, building construction, PPE, SCBA, tactics
the list goes on. Before we expect them to understand flow paths, ventilation-limited fires, or why we’re making certain tactical decisions, they need to understand the fundamentals those decisions are built on. Don’t rush through the basics just because you’ve heard them a hundred times. Teach the Fire Triangle. Then teach them how it connects to the fireground. Why does closing a door matter? What happens when we introduce air? How does applying water affect the fire? Why does controlling ventilation matter? Give your new firefighters the foundation first. Explain the why, let them ask questions, and never make someone feel stupid for not knowing something they haven’t been taught yet. We were all probies once. Master the basics. Build the foundation. Then build the firefighter. #TriStateFireTraining #IntoTheJob #RaiseTheStandard

There’s a reason the best athletes in the world still practice the same fundamentals they learned when they were kids. At the highest level, it isn’t always about doing something more complicated. It’s about doing the simple things with precision, intensity, and consistency. So what makes the fire service any different? Too often we convince ourselves that the basics are beneath us. We want the complicated drill. The big scenario. The once in a career incident. Meanwhile, we overlook the skills we may need tonight, tomorrow, and multiple times next week. Stretching the line. Throwing ladders. Forcing doors. Search. Pump operations. Size up. Communication. Tool work. The fundamentals still matter. That doesn’t mean we stop training for the difficult or unusual incidents. All training has value. But our training programs should reflect our departments, our staffing, our equipment, our buildings, and the incidents we actually respond to. There’s nothing flashy about mastering the basics. There doesn’t need to be. Master the basics. Then build from there. Interested in bringing Tri State Fire Training in for a fundamentals drill night? We can work with your department to build a night around the skills your members actually need. Reach out to us and let’s get something on the schedule. #raisethestandard

We keep asking life for more time. More time to be present. More time to make things right. More time to chase what matters. More time with the people we love. More time to become who we said we would be. The problem is, more time was never promised. Stop waiting for the perfect moment. What are you waiting for? #ThePassionateLeader #Leadership #MoreTime #BePresent #makeitcount
