SWIPE LEFT at the beginning of the year, I posted a list of goals for the month (it’s the photo with me on the couch). I’ve been doing pretty good and it looks like I’ll get almost of them done within the next week and then some.

The one I’m not quite achieving is my goal to reprint new versions of two of my photobooks: “#FindTheBumdog” and “Leica Bumdog”. When I said self publish, I meant printing out 50 copies each of them.

But now I’m hesitant. Every once in awhile someone will call me out for how much money I make off my books. It’s usually those professional oogle cyber-spangers, trying to guilt me into sending them money. But the truth is every time I self-publish a photobook, I don’t make money, I GO INTO DEBT!

The printer I’ve been working with for years, always fronts me the initial costs of the books, usually for several thousand dollars, and I pay him off over time as I sell the books. For example the first draft of the “Hollywood/Krazy” book costs $49 and some change to print. I sold it for $75. So every time I sold one, I had to run back to the printer to give him his $49. That’s no way to make a living. That’s no way to live a life.

I’ve been relatively out of debt for over a year now. If I print out these two photobooks I’ll be over $4,000 in debt right off the bat. I LIKE paying off my debts. But I don’t like owing anything to begin with. Which means these two TEST BOOKS, are gonna have to count as “self-published”. At least for this month anyway.
