Thanks for having us out for the cocktail hour, where we played min’yo music, and for letting us call in the show with a kumidaiko set. We had a great time getting to talk with folks afterwards, as well.

We had an unforgettable time at the Nikkei Angel Island Pilgrimage, hosted by the @nichibeifoundation ! We joined other pilgrims from Sacramento for a bus ride to Tiburon, where we caught the ferry to Angel Island. On the island, we joined pilgrims from San Jose and San Fransisco for a ceremony at the historic Angel Island Immigration Station, where we reflected on the experiences of the Issei and other immigrants who were held there. Pilgrims were also able to tour the exhibits and meet with representatives from the California Genealogical Society to learn more about their family history.

A theme of the gathering was “remembrance is an act of resistance against erasure.” As we remember the challenging lives of the Issei, we also reflect on the challenges that immigrants face today. Through events like these, we affirm the need to learn from our past and imagine new worlds that are kinder and more just.

IWA DAIKO performed for the opening of the ceremony, for Bon dancing at the end of the ceremony, and on both ferry rides. We had a great time playing on the water! Dancing with everyone also such a meaningful part of the gathering. We also got to debut a cover of Lantern Song, an Obon favorite by our friends Bonbu Stories. Thanks for dancing, everyone!

Thank you Nichi Bei Foundation and @kenjitaguma for organizing such a fun and meaningful event! Thanks to our good friend @naoko_wasabi1 for joining us, as well.

We had a blast at the @kadontaiko Taiko Block Party in Little Tokyo last weekend! We played the community stage on Saturday and for the Bon Odori Hour with @mikansmusic on Sunday. We also attended skill labs, circle competitions, discussions, the hachijo bar, and the many performances throughout the jam-packed weekend. Thanks to all the organizers, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who made the weekend happen.

Our whole team was able to make it for weekend! We all crashed at Lisa’s family’s house (thank you!!!), went to Wi Spa together, and hung out with taiko people at the afterparty.

Over this past year, bon music has been a major focus of our group, in addition to kumidaiko, and it was awesome to get to play both sets for this event.

For our kumidaiko(ish) set, we played “Nights Like This,” which we entered in the Creative Composition Challenge earlier this year; “Doshin Bayashi,” one of our signature songs; “Onami,” the first song that James wrote back when he was in high school; and an arrangement of“Ameagari,” Gregory’s first taiko composition from college.

For the Bon Odori hour, we played Shiawase Samba, Tokyo Ondo, Souma Bon Uta, Ashita Ga Arusa, Ue O Muite Arukou, Okagesama, and Ei Ja Nai Ka. We played many of these songs at the Walnut Grove Obon this year and at the Davis Cherry Blossom Festival.

It was great to see everyone!

We took a trip to Stockton for the @buddhistchurchofstockton Obon! It was a good time with some fun dances! The Tanko Bushi dance is a more elaborate version than the one we use, the Hokkai Bon Uta had a reggae twist, and two dances were arranged to Bruno Mars songs. It’s always fun seeing the unique character of each Obon!

It was nice to catch up with friends there, too! Hope to see you again soon!

We also visited Little Manila and the Wat Dhammararam Buddhist Temple (photo with the giant lying Buddha) while we were in town, and we got some shave ice from Ululani. Thanks for the fun time, Stockton!
