✨What an inspiring day at the Philippine Nurses Association of Northern California, Inc. (PNANC) 2026 Professional and Clinical Nursing Update & General Assembly!✨

Guided by this year’s theme, “Bridging the Gap, Creating Impact: Every Voice Matters,” the conference brought nursing professionals together to exchange knowledge, share perspectives, and strengthen our collective commitment to nursing excellence.

We were privileged to learn from our distinguished speakers: Toni Blacer , Rebecca Hidalgo Salomon, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FADLN , Philip Garcia , Susan Somlai, and Dr. Theresa Mostasisa. As healthcare continues to evolve, our responsibility extends beyond recognizing gaps. Our speakers highlighted how we must turn knowledge into action, empower others to contribute, and foster environments where every voice is valued.

Regardless of where we serve—at the bedside, in leadership, education, research, or community health—we share a common purpose: delivering safe, compassionate, and high-quality patient care.

🌧️🇵🇭 RAIN OR SHINE, PINOY PRIDE IS ALWAYS FINE! 🇵🇭❤️💙💛

Despite the rain, PNA-Bay Area turned the day into a beautiful blessing as we celebrated Filipino-American History Month with a whole lot of Filipino fun, food, laughter, and festivities! 🎉🇵🇭

From the irresistible pancit 🍜, sweet turon 🍌, and yummy puto 🍚 to the nostalgic sari-sari store paninda and raffle prizes 🎁—parang biglang umuwi sa Pilipinas! 😂❤️ All we needed was a karaoke machine singing “Dahil Sa’Yo” and the celebration would be complete! 🎤🤣

The rain may have poured, but so did the love, laughter, and bayanihan spirit! Because no matter where we are in the world, the Filipino spirit shines brighter than any storm. 🌈✨

Grateful for a community that keeps our culture alive, celebrates our heritage, and reminds us that home isn’t just a place—it’s the people, the food, and the traditions we carry in our hearts. 🇵🇭❤️

Fentanyl, Overdose & the Fight to Save Lives

OVERDOSE? What’s going on?

The opioid crisis is still taking far too many lives. In 2024, an estimated 80,391 people died from drug overdoses in the United States, including 54,743 deaths involving opioids (CDC, 2026).

Here in San Francisco, 625 people died from accidental drug overdoses in 2025 (SF Gov, 2026). Behind every number was a person - a family member, a friend, a neighbor, someone whose life mattered.

Over the past five years, the city recorded hundreds of accidental overdose deaths every year:

2021 — 640 deaths
2022 — 620 deaths
2023 — 813 deaths
2024 — 635 deaths
2025 — 625 deaths

That is more than 3,300 lives lost in just five years!

But opioid dependence does not have to end in overdose. There is a pathway forward.

For people struggling with fentanyl, heroin, or other illicit opioids, effective treatment exists. Medications such as methadone and buprenorphine can substantially reduce overdose and overall mortality and help people move toward stability and recovery.

And while someone is still on that journey, NARCAN (naloxone) saves lives. Carry it. Know how to use it. Make it available. An overdose reversed today is another opportunity for treatment, recovery, and tomorrow.

Recovery is possible. Treatment works.

#Research: Learning About Kinship, Acculturation/Enculturation, and Strength (LAKAS) Study on Filipinx/a/o American Families

Dr. Donna Demanarig, PhD, Visiting Assistant Professor at the College of the Holy Cross and President of the Asian American Psychological Association, along with Tayo Core Team Member Marian Herboso, are currently seeking Filipinx/a/o American parents/caregivers and adolescents to participate in the Learning About Kinship, Acculturation/Enculturation, and Strength (LAKAS) Study.

This study explores how cultural values, parent–child relationships, and experiences of stress shape emotions, communication, and mental health within Filipinx/a/o American families. The goal of this research is to better understand both the challenges and strengths within these families and help inform culturally responsive mental health support and community resources.

Eligible participants include parent/caregiver and adolescent pairs who identify as Filipinx/a/o or Filipinx/a/o American, live in the United States, and are comfortable speaking and understanding English. Adolescents must be between the ages of 11–17.

Participation includes brief surveys (approximately 10–15 minutes) and separate virtual Zoom interviews (approximately 75–90 minutes each). Each participating parent-adolescent pair will receive a $25 gift card.
