What if Nature had legal rights, like humans and corporations? The #rightsofnature is a legal & social revolution to change how the law treats Nature.

Something big has just happened - and it carries nationwide, if not global, implications.

A UK council has officially acknowledged: nature has rights.

While other councils have explored river rights in different forms, Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) has become the first to formally adopt a Rights of Nature framework. A framework that recognises rivers, trees, soils, and wildlife as holding intrinsic value, and the right to exist, thrive, and be considered in decision-making alongside people and the economy. A framework that honours Indigenous worldviews, and the understanding that we are not separate from the living world; we hold a shared responsibility.

The key difference is this is not symbolic. It is being embedded in policy and actively shaping planning decisions, biodiversity strategy, and climate action. Nature is beginning to be represented.

And this is where Friends of the River Medway come in. This shift emerged through a wide, evolving landscape - and our pilgrimage was a part of it.

During that journey, we held a gathering that brought councillors together from across the catchment for the first time. Guided by @tristram_stuart and shaped by the presence of the river, it created space for a rare kind of listening: across institutions, communities, and the more-than-human world.

MBC had previously considered aspects of this approach before, but it had not progressed. The conference helped renew conversations and re-energise the idea, contributing to the conditions in which this framework could grow and be born.

Thank you to the Indigenous peoples across the world for pioneering this approach, to everyone at @maidstonebc and @paulpowesland for bringing this framework into being, and for all those taking a significant step in making the Rights of Nature a reality.

We have no doubt: pilgrimages hold immense power. Not just for inner change, but for long-term cultural and ecological shifts. And the time is now.

Join us on our next River Medway Pilgrimage, 17-27 July, and be part of what unfolds when people - and the river - meet in common unity.

It’s been at least a decade of campaigning to get @norwichcitycouncil to take the rights of the river seriously. So tonight was pretty sweet.
Although it was sad to see so many Labour councillors speaking against a motion that puts Norwich on the map of nature defenders, we got there in the end. Thank you to Cllr Lubbock (Lib Dem) for seconding.

A really important step for our wonderful river - and towards filling the ‘nature shaped hole’ in rights

Thanks for the fantastic support @wensumriverkin @cowtowerdippers @mrgchampion @norfolkwt @robgmacfarlane and many more
