What would we know and what would we be able to do if we wouldn’t ever had “teachers” for almost everything we’re capable of? We probably wouldn’t be able to speak, nor to walk or to lace up our shoes. Not even mentioning reading, writing and having good manners when sitting at a table in good company.

Look at babies: they learn by imitation. And when we’re older, we still learn when surrounded by people to somehow imitate or acquire understanding from. We need to be led, guided and inspired – which this whole Drinkstagram Community stands for.

Actually we couldn’t say and write anything here (but in so many other daily matters as well) if we hadn’t been inspired by someone else’s shared knowledge. Nowadays there are so many tools to learn and get informed and improve our knowledge, even rather effortlessly. Out there there’s more YouTube videos & podcasts we’d ever have time to watch and listen to in our whole life. Easy ways to nourish our curiosity, broaden our knowledge and get into even deeper rabbit holes without even noticing 😉

This delectable cocktail, which we already knew from the first #deathandcobook but never really ‘noticed’, was recently brought again to our attention by Dr. Jessica Spector @theacademydrinks when guest of Lee Ann @scotchonthebayou during a You Tube Live (you’ll find the link in our Stories).

Besides being an entertaining conversation, this Phil Ward creation was the cocktail that stuck with us. Obviously, a riff on a Last Word.

Pete’s Word

¾ oz Laphroaig 10Y (we @laphroaig #Laphroaigquartercask)
¾ oz Maraschino (@luxardoofficial)
¾ oz Green Chartreuse (@chartreuse_uk)
¾ oz lime juice

Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with an #amarenafabbri

One of the best parts of my job is spending time with people who are experts in their field and passionate about what they do. Passion and expertise are compelling to be around. So when @curi0usjenn invited me to spend the day at Hiram Walker with her as the guest of master blender Dr Don Livermore @cdnwhiskydoc I headed to Windsor, Canada.

Dr. Don is the mind behind @jpwisers @lot40 @pikecreek_whisky and many others. He oversees a massive operation encompassing many brands, and is still very thoughtful about the interaction of flavors between grain and yeast and wood in the whisky he blends. He spent the day with us showing us labs, taking us on a tour of grain silos and warehouses, and leading a blending seminar unlike any I’d done before.

Canadian whisky is an underappreciated category in the USA, and Dr Don is on a mission to change that for all the uisgephiles out there.

Our ash trees have been decimated by the emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis), an invasive beetle that essentially suffocates and starves the tree. It’s track marks are beautiful, though tragic.

The best defense against the EAB and other such threats is forest diversity.

I don't even know where to begin after the past three whirlwind days with these amazing ladies visiting from Alberta. When IG connects people with the same passions, magical things happen. Meeting IRL and sharing some very cool experiences is what life is all about. Plus boomerangs 😉

From greeting them at the airport Friday night with glencairns of @jpwiser Red Letter whisky to local breweries, wineries, NOTL and Niagara Falls to visiting a super cool microdistillery, walking though their process to spending our last day at North America's largest distillery with the amazing @cdnwhiskydoc and team, doing alllll the things and meeting new whisky friends, I'm kinda feeling like a rock star that's been on the road for days with minimal sleep, going from town to town, new places, new faces, new experiences and loving every minute of it, grateful to be along for the ride.
.
And now, everyone has been safely tucked away on their planes heading home and I'm back in my little house 1300+km later, exhausted and grinning from ear to ear from living my best life...but now my house is way too quiet and empty and there is no line up for the bathroom....so who wants to visit next??? 😏

14 hour days @holystonedistilling when he’s not flying airplanes around the world. Weekends, holidays, day and night he’s at it. Never letting our demanding mistress down. Such continual gratitude for him. Always doing whatever it takes. It’s not easy managing so much. We barely have time to breathe, but he pushes forward with strength and commitment. 🖤

Road down from the upper pastures. There’s a spring-fed stream alongside it, and more animals use it than people these days. But it is still a solid enough road to drive on. (I think)
