Part 1: This week on Perfect Songs Forever, @onelastfisch and I talk about one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful and desolate songs I’ve ever heard: “Unfinished Paintings” by @theaislersset

When I picked this song, I had no idea Rudy actually had a personal connection to Amy Linton (Now A V Linton), the songwriter and singer behind this incredibly melancholy, gloomy, lonely.. masterpiece. That revelation led to a lot of laughing, and me joking that maybe the song was actually about Rudy.
We both knew it wasn’t.

But “Unfinished Paintings” has always felt intensely personal to me. I think it’s one of the greatest breakup songs ever recorded and now 20 some years after it’s release it kills me even more.. In my opinion the Aislers Set are one of the most remarkable and underrated indie rock bands of the early 2000’s.

The Aislers Set had everything I loved: one part ’60s girl group, one part garage rock, one part desolate singer-songwriter, throw in a trumpet and some bells to make it a little psych pop and it’s all wrapped up in this beautifully imperfect reverby lo-fi production. There was something so romantic and mysterious about them.

If you’re a music fan and have been to SF you’ll mostly likely recognize the location in the first image. @bottomofthehillsf. This past weekend we were there for SF Bay Popfest. For those that know me well you know that @sarah_sturgill met at this festival in 1999. I was living in Portland and Sarah was going to college in Illinois.

After some long distance dating, Sarah moved out to Portland and we went back to following popfests leading to me proposing at the one in 2003 at the exact location we met.

Heres’s some pics of some the bands we saw this year including our old friends @dearnorareality.

On the final slide is a video where they gave us a nice shoutout to celebrate the reason we met, 27 years later!

1. Bottom of the Hill which is closing this year after 35 years

2. @lightheadedband

3. @marioishii1312 Kids on a Crime Spree

4. @theaislersset

5. The Kitchenettes

6. @jeaninesband

7. @dearnorareality

8. @nommix and @oaklandweekender

Way back in 1999, we were lucky enough to have some amazing friends play our wedding party at Bottom of the Hill. The club is closing at the end of the year, and a bunch of those friends and more were playing there this weekend at the #sfbaypopfest, so of course we had to go. 💕 (bonus photo of me and @nommix at the 2001 Popfest) Thank you to all who made it happen - what a weekend!
