On this day, 5 years ago, Dance Theatre of Harlem: A History, A Movement, A Celebration was published! I can’t believe how time flies. Every day, I’m reminded that preserving history means ensuring that the stories of the individuals who shaped it remain accessible. Behind every photograph, program, and piece of memorabilia is a story that deserves to be saved, shared, and remembered. As a dancer, I was fortunate to be a part of this extraordinary history. As an archivist, I came to understand how easily our stories can disappear if we do not work to save and share them. I'm grateful to everyone who helped bring this book to life, especially co-writer Paul Novosel, and to the generations of artists, teachers, leaders, supporters, and audiences who continue to carry the legacy forward. Today, I celebrate everyone who made Dance Theatre of Harlem possible. Whether your time with the company was brief or spanned many years, your story matters! #ChromaDiverse #DanceTheatreofHarlem #DanceHistory #ArtisticLegacy #EveryStorySavedIsALegacyPreserved Artists: From top left and clockwise: Charmaine Hunter, Wendy Whelan, Amanda Smith, Alicia Graf Mack

Lydia Abarca — 1975 @dancemagazine #ArchiveFriday | Looking back at some of the magazine covers that have featured dancers from Dance Theatre of Harlem. From Lydia Abarca, who made history in 1975 as the first Black ballerina to appear on the cover of Dance Magazine, to Kamala Saara, who was featured on the cover in 2024! Cheers to the amazing, inspiring dancers who have helped shape the history, visibility, and future of ballet. #DanceTheatreofHarlem #DanceMagazine #PointeMagazine Ashley Murphy, Ebony Williams & Misty Copeland — 2014 @pointemagazineofficial Ingrid Silva — 2017 Pointe Magazine Amanda Smith & Da’Von Doane — 2019 Dance Magazine Photo by Jayme Thornton Kamala Saara — 2024 Dance Magazine
