Instant PlayLab 23: HOLDING A HEADLINE

In collaboration with @theaterinasylum

Part of our cross stitch series, where we open up our Instant PlayLabs to fellow devising ensembles.

This lab cut, pasted, and reimagined the day’s news cycle, transforming headlines into performance.

👏 Congratulations to @theaterinasylum on 15 years of bold, community-rooted theatermaking! They’re celebrating with a fundraiser now — go give them some love.

Does one “bear witness” to a headline? Deeper than soundbites or signaling, in real time, let’s discover how we HOLD. Together. That’s what we do at a Playlab. Come make with us: link in bio. #theatre #newwork #theater

nyc friends; come see me in collaboration with my favorite theater community and artists once again!!! ✨

blessed to say that I’ll be back to visit Gotham City for @theaterinasylum How to Survive the End of the World Cabaret Friday, November 1st and Saturday, November 2nd. in collaboration with @titaniagalliher and @jess_panora and directed (and written 💁🏽‍♀️) by the amazing @melissa.mowry, we’ll be presenting Phoenix: A Ritual for the End of Time.

“lightning was striking all around us and thunder clapped in our ears. not knowing how long this black cloud would be with us, we looked up. searching the heavens for daylight.”

three women are stranded as the world outside is crumbling around them. their fight for survival brings them closer to themselves and each other.

tickets are on a sliding scale from $0-$35 (pay what you can) and will be performed at the Jallopy Theater in Brooklyn.

come say hi and see some great work from a whole gaggle of amazing artists!! link in bio for tickets or visit @theaterinasylum for tix!! 💖

P.S. we’re there for TWO nights only but the song gives a certain je ne sais quoi that was appropriate and it’s what i imagine the soundtrack of the end of the world would be. 🤭

There were quite literally too many people to tag. I don’t post pictures of myself that often, so here’s a little bit of a photo dump for the past few months. I’m sure there’s more that are missing, which goes to show I’m living my best life right now. Finally taking a chance to say no to more things in order to say yes to others. Thank you all for being in my life and here’s to even more years to come.

Director Katie Palmer tells us about the origins of the House Un-American Activities Committee, mostly remembered for “the red scare,” whose first target was the Federal Theater Project, which was considered to be an arm of communism as it was believed that “racial equality forms a vital part of the Communist dictatorship and practices.”

We ask Director Katie Palmer, What is theater for? And she notes that “empathetically, you’re relating to the characters… but you’re also noticing the other audience members… you’re hearing their reactions and it just adds to the societal element of ‘we are in this together’.”
