The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk, Theatre J. ⭐️⭐️⭐️. As a story about a masterful painter and the woman who loves him, The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk inevitably has echos of Sunday in the Park. But in this lovely, melancholy play the love story is more interrsting than the artist’s struggle to create. Much credit for that has to go to Dani Stoller’s performance as Bella Chagall. She is vivacious and funny and completely engaging. This production beautifully invokes the lost culture of the Pale of Settlement with klezmer-inflected music and projections of Chagall’s paintings; the result is touching. The play is by no means perfect. Some of the dialogue is clunky and a bit too direct, and some parts of the plot feel underdeveloped, but it soars where it needs to.
