On a bright sunny September day I did my first dye bath with woad, grown in my garden. The colour colour goes well with yarn dyed from Coreopsis.

There's something we've been wanting to talk about for a while 🌊

The dyeing process is one of the most polluting industries in the world, and one of the least talked about. 15,000 chemicals in the supply chain. Rivers turned into colours. Skin that absorbs what factories discard.

We chose a different path when we started Pachagurú. We work with plants, waste, and time.

Every colour on every piece comes from something the earth gave us, and goes back to it without leaving a trace 🌿

Plus every cotton fabric we use come from discarded hospitality linen. ♻️

We are all responsable of this situation.
We choose taking action to create less bad impacts to the world.

Kicking off 2026 with my first bundle-dyeing experiment—letting onion skins, turmeric, pomegranate, madder root, and rose petals leave their mark on silkworm and cotton plants through the quiet work of time.

I was blessed to get a few pro-tips about natural dye from @jamielouiseyoung @thebarefootdyer! Follow her for inspiration!

1. I washed the bandanas and soaked them in alum for 2 hrs (this creates a mordant), then hang dry - alum amount should be 10% the weigh of the fabric (something Jamie taught me).
2. I then soaked them in calcium carbonate (10% wof) for 30 min before dying
3. The kids collected the onion skins, I covered them with water and simmered for about an hr and let cool.
4. The kids rubber banded their bandanas and I poured the dye over a cheese cloth and into some jars to take home.
5. Removed the bandanas after 12-24 hrs/ rinse/ wash wish mild soap and hang to dry.

Posting this at the risk of greatly oversimplifying a subject with one of the most complex supply chains on earth. If you’d like to educate yourself or suspect you may be experiencing sensitivities or symptoms of dye exposure, please read “To Dye For” by Alden Wicker, who has visited these dye houses firsthand, and reminds us on Substack that “every chemical and pharmaceutical company - BASF, Bayer, Novartis, DuPont - got its start manufacturing textile dye from coal tar or petroleum.” Today’s world is so overwhelmed with toxins there’s even a diagnosis for it: TILT (Toxicant-Induced Loss of Tolerance). Our bodies are at capacity. One lead-leaching shirt or teflon pan can push us over the brink and into an autoimmune disorder. Given you’ve already ditched all your nonstick cookware, plastic cutting boards and polyester yoga pants, the next thing I’d prescribe for detoxifying your home is undyed & unbleached organic sheets. Refer to @ecocultcom shopping guides for where to purchase.
