Sweet, Sweet Spirit began with a very personal purpose. When my mother moved into an assisted living home, my sister asked me to record some of the hymns we had known since childhood. These were songs my siblings and I had sung in church with our mother every Sunday, and I wanted my mother to have them with her as a connection to those memories.

Years later, those recordings have become something more than I originally imagined. As I return to these songs, reimagined in a jazz-gospel hybrid format with the help of @donwas , @rickydillard , James Farber, Simone Banos, and Zeke Listenbee, I hear their lyrics differently and continue to find deeper meaning in them. The music has become a way of remembering where I came from while also considering where we are going.

I’m honored to help carry these songs into the future—for my mother and family, certainly, but also for the larger human family we all share.

For your consideration, #PlanetElegance #SweetSweetSpirit @grammys .

Happy Birthday to Jean Norris-Baylor, the Sultry Siren of Jazz & R&B!

Born October 9, 1970, in Moorestown, NJ, Jean Norris-Baylor studied jazz piano at Temple University before co-founding the 90s R&B duo Zhané. After meeting Naughty by Nature producer Kay Gee, the pair signed with Motown.

Jean served as a co-lead and songwriter behind smooth-grooving, platinum classics like “Hey Mr. D.J.” and “Groove Thang”. Transitioning beyond Zhané, she formed the multi-Grammy-nominated jazz and gospel duo The Baylor Project alongside her husband, Marcus Baylor.

Renowned for her rich vocal elegance and deep musicality, Jean’s enduring impact spans classic R&B, contemporary jazz, and spiritual soul.
