MY BOOK IS FINALLY HERE!!! 📚✨ My first coloring book, Meet The Dynamites, has officially arrived! ❤️ This is the first of several coloring/activity books I plan to release as I continue building the Dynamites brand and bringing this intellectual property to life. But the story behind it goes back to the late 1980s, when I was just a kid. As a latchkey kid and the oldest of three brothers, I was responsible for watching my younger brothers for a few hours after school. Like many kids growing up in the ’80s, I’d watch cartoons like G.I. Joe, Transformers, Thundercats and Scooby-Doo. But I remember noticing something: I rarely saw Black girls and women who looked like the women in my community represented in animation. My mother is my shero. Beautiful, smart, funny, independent and kind. And when I looked at the cartoons I loved, I wanted to see characters that reflected the strong Black women I knew. So, as an elementary school assignment in the late ’80s, The Dynamites were born. What started as an idea from an 11-year-old kid has stayed with me all these years. Now I’m finally bringing that idea to a new generation. 💜 Meet The Dynamites is just the beginning. If you’d like to support the journey, grab your copy and become part of The Dynamites family! 🚀 #TheDynamites #MeetTheDynamites #ColoringBook #BlackGirlsInAnimation #RepresentationMatters

THE STORY BEHIND THE DYNAMITES: MERCEDES BLACKWELL Every character has a story—and sometimes, the inspiration comes from somewhere very personal. Meet Mercedes Blackwell, a member of Cliché and one of the toughest girls at school. Beautiful, confident, and always wearing that unmistakable mean look, Mercedes is definitely not someone you want to cross! But the inspiration behind her name comes from my own family. Mercedes was named in honour of my grandmother, Mercedes Reid Logan. I always found it fascinating that my grandmother was named after an expensive car! I had the opportunity to meet her when my brothers and I travelled to Jamaica during the 1980s, and I remember her as a sweet, quiet and kind woman who didn’t have much to say—but her presence spoke volumes. Interestingly, Mercedes Blackwell is almost the complete opposite of my grandmother! 😂 In The Dynamites, Mercedes is a first-generation American, the eldest of five siblings born to hardworking parents. And, in another fun family connection, all five children are named after luxury automobiles. And here’s the funny part: I decided to make Mercedes’ parents a fictionalized version of my own parents! 😂 I gave them a heads-up before doing it, so thankfully, I’m still on speaking terms with them! LOL. For me, Mercedes Blackwell is more than just the tough girl in Cliché. She’s also a small tribute to my grandmother and a reminder that the people and experiences from our lives can inspire characters in the most unexpected ways. That’s a little bit of the story behind Mercedes Blackwell. ❤️ #TheDynamites #Mercedes #BehindTheCharacter #CreativeSoulENT #TheStoryBehindTheStory
