Thinking a great deal about the cycles of grief while coming to grips with losing both my parents and brother within a short time frame.

I am also preoccupied with thinking about my own mortality and legacy. As I grapple with many existential questions about life, I hope the next seven generations in my family understands my life’s work and goals for our family.

So many are losing loved ones during this season of our lives. While the pain never goes away, take time to cherish the moments.

Recently, I have been promoted to initiate conversations with Black men about getting older, legacy planning and the inevitability of death.

Meet the inaugural Kindred Abundance Infrastructure and Ecosystem Grant recipients.

Through 23 grants totaling $695,000, CLLCTIVLY is investing in organizations our communities already depend on and collaborations building what Greater Baltimore needs next.

Fifteen organizations will receive $25,000 Infrastructure Grants to strengthen the foundation beneath their work. Eight collaborations will receive $40,000 Ecosystem Grants to connect expertise and resources around shared community priorities.

These awards are part of the inaugural $1.28 million Kindred Abundance initiative, which also includes microgrants, rapid-response funding, and a $500,000 zero-interest loan fund.

CLLCTIVLY developed Kindred Abundance to invest in organizations, the relationships between them, and the infrastructure no organization should have to build alone. Elbow Fund joined as the initiative’s first funding partner.

Why Giving Collectively Matters

We are in a moment where giving is growing, but too often the resources are not reaching the Black-led organizations doing the work.

From 2016 to 2023, only half of Black-led nonprofits received a foundation grant in a given year, compared with 70% of white-led nonprofits. Small Black-led nonprofits were the most likely to receive no foundation funding at all.

And while institutional giving grew 44% between 2019 and 2023, funding for racial justice never exceeded 1.4% of institutional giving.

That is why CLLCTIVGive matters.

Because when large systems pull back, community must move closer.
