The Mosque of Ahmad Ibn Tulun… Over 1100 Years of History in the Heart of Cairo

In the heart of Old Cairo, the Mosque of Ahmad Ibn Tulun stands as one of the most important and beautiful examples of Islamic architecture in Egypt.

It was built by Ahmad Ibn Tulun between 263 and 265 AH / 876–879 CE, to serve as the congregational mosque for al-Qata'i, the capital of his new state.

Among its most distinctive features are: • The spiral minaret with its external staircase, influenced by the architecture of Samarra in Iraq.

• A spacious central courtyard surrounded by four arcades.

• Distinctive geometric and floral stucco decorations.

• Primarily constructed of red brick.

• It is one of the oldest Islamic mosques in Egypt that has largely retained its historical layout.

And the most beautiful thing?

When you walk through its arcades, you don't feel like you're visiting just a historical site… but rather as if you're stepping into a living part of Cairo's history.
