I haven’t mentioned on this account that one of my side projects is running a philanthropic entity called Rhizomium Foundation. I’m thrilled to have @lostartpress and @1snugthejoiner as board members / co-conspirators. 2025 was our first year of operation and our focus is providing grants to non-profit entities that work in the fields of natural conservation and craft. Rhizomium has its own IG account (@rhizomium ) on which we’ll feature some of the organizations and projects we’ve funded, and we’ll eventually have a website that describes a little more about what we do and how we do it.

But today I thought I’d share on this account a really cool project that Rhizomium had the honor of funding. We partnered with Madison’s @thebodgery for “Rivers, Rocks, and Ropes,” a boat building class for 15 students at @shabazzcityhighschool . Students collaboratively applied science, math, and engineering concepts and gained woodworking and metalworking skills in building a Bevin skiff that will be used by future Shabazz students to explore and study the Yahara River Watershed. I was privileged to attend the ceremonial launch of the boat on Lake Mendota last Thursday and I got to see the boat, meet the core instructors, and speak with a few of the kids.

Most of us will very soon see the bulk of our existence chaperoned by AI. What an amazing experience for these kids to get to build something outside Minecraft, with their own hands, that will be used in the real world for years to come. One student I spoke to at the boat launch said “I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life before this class.” As someone with a special needs child who absolutely did not fit into conventional educational practices, I know firsthand how important this kind of tangible education is, and it’s an honor to be involved with it in some small way. Thanks to Jay Larson (@cedarfishboatco ) , Dave Zanella, and Greg Watson at the Bodgery and Brian Counselman, Joe St. Peter, and Sydney De Selm at Shabazz for being captains on this worthy adventure. Some pics in this reel provided by Jay Larson.
