Resistance to new border wall construction is growing in Arizona, with cemeteries, burial grounds and respect for the dead emerging as a major concern.

Members of the Tohono O’odham Nation continue a prayer camp opposing border wall construction along their land.

Tohono O’odham Chairman Verlon Jose says construction has disturbed sacred sites and human remains. The Nation has repeatedly warned that border construction threatens places of profound cultural and religious importance.

And the concern over the dead doesn’t end on the Tohono O’odham Nation.

Roughly 100 miles east, near Lochiel, environmental activists and Indigenous land protectors are trying to protect an important wildlife corridor and ancient cottonwood trees.

There, another cemetery has become part of the fight.

Protesters and a local family say border wall construction has damaged the private road leading to their historic cemetery, making it inaccessible by vehicle.

The Department of Homeland Security says the new wall is necessary to close what it describes as a longstanding border-security gap and dangerous smuggling corridor.

But Santa Cruz County Sheriff David Hathaway — the chief law-enforcement officer in the county where the Lochiel protest is taking place — offers a sharply different assessment, questioning whether additional border wall construction makes his community safer.

KPFA News has spent the week on the ground in southern Arizona — from the Tohono O’odham prayer camp, to the tree sit in Lochiel, to both sides of the border in Nogales.

Our very own, @denisse.carr, was able to go to the recent hearing in solidarity for Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.
We The People RGV was present in Judge Nereida Singleterry’s courtroom in regard to Spencer Construction LLC vs Hidalgo County Irrigation #2. As expected it was moved to federal court. Please call your congressional representatives and demand to stop the border wall as it will affect the food chain as well as many ecological, economic, and environmental aspects. Call our South Texas elected officials, everyone needs to be vocal of what is happening in regards to the border wall, we are not a political bargain coin, this affects us all. Thank you.
We will provide updates as they come in. The fight is not over. The TRO (Temporary Restraining Order) has been renewed until 8-27-2026.

BREAKING: The Trump Administration just waived dozens of federal laws to expedite construction of two, parallel border walls across the Tohono O’odham Nation.

The waiver sweeps aside more than 30 environmental, cultural, and public health laws—including the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, National Historic Preservation Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, American Indian Religious Freedom Act, and the National Park Service Organic Act.

For the Tohono O’odham Nation, the risks are profound: the project moves forward over the Nation’s objections, undermining tribal sovereignty and threatening the Nation’s ability to protect its own lands, resources, and cultural heritage. By waiving laws that safeguard sacred sites, burial grounds, archaeological resources, wildlife, water, and the environment, the project removes critical review, consultation, and protections.

@tohonooodhamnation is fighting back, and has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to stop the federal government from taking reservation land and water for border wall construction.

We took a trip to Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge today. DHS stated they would start construction THIS WEEK, and that time has come. The poles are out and ONLY Authorized Personnel can pass the orange pole which is located close to the visitor center. This is a hard day for us. We’ve been dreading this moment. Please call your local representatives. We need to let them know that as residents of the RGV, we should have access to OUR PUBLIC LAND! Script available on 5th slide. PLEASE CALL! 📞

We recently read this beautiful article by The Border Chronicle (thank you @yo_gabba for sharing ♡) featuring @tucsonrollercollective and the incredible work they’re doing to build a binational skate community.

The group is organizing rollouts & bringing skaters together from Arizona — Sonora. Their work is a reminder that community doesn’t stop at a border, it grows every time we show up for one another.

As a skate club that exists on the frontera, stories like these mean so much. They remind us that our community isn’t limited by language, nationality, or borders.
