The Braag CIC publishes work & supports underrepresented writers in the North of England. Also a Northumbrian trickster spirit. WE SELL BOOKS!
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Thanks to the incredible generosity of @ninearchespress and @thebraag, I am offering these two book bundles - a mystery bundle of ten Nine Arches poetry books & a bundle of all six of the current Braag poetry pamphlets + a lino print of the Braag logo - at a huge discount to raise funds so I can offer a FREE place on my upcoming @arvon__ residential course in January to someone who could never otherwise attend! There are limited numbers of these book bundles, and not only do you get some excellent reading materials, you are helping me give an opportunity to a writer from an under represented community to be nurtured and to take their writing seriously, perhaps for the first time. http://taniahershman.com/shop/ (link also in bio) I raised half of the amount needed from the Zoom workshop I ran last week - I would be so grateful if you could help me raise the rest from the sales of these book bundles. I will be opening up applications for the funded place in November, so the bundles will only be available til Oct 31st - or while stocks last! http://taniahershman.com/shop/ (link also in bio) You can find out more about the Arvon course: Poetry: Queer and Queering Poetic Forms, Jan 18-23rd, at the Hurst, which I am co-tutoring with the excellent @jamesmcdermott1993, with @shortestwitch Kym Deyn (who runs @thebraag press) as our fabulous midweek guest, here: https://www.arvon.org/writing-courses/courses-retreats/residential-writing-course-poetry-22/ @mcrpoetrylibrary @thepoetryschool @thepoetrysociety @queerlituk @polariprize @polarisalon @beyondformcreativewriting

Conversing with the Ghazal is a practical, generative workshop for absolute beginners and seasoned writers alike that shares two complementary perspectives. Gita Ralleigh shares techniques for writing both traditional and contemporary ghazals, drawing on the work of poets such as Agha Shahid Ali, Mona Arshi and Zeina Hashem Beck.  Rishika Williams shares the analytical tools she has developed to explore the choices the form presents. Together they discuss the cultural beliefs embedded in the form, exploring order, repetition and meaning. The workshop fee of £15 includes a signed copy of Gita Ralleigh’s new pamphlet  Empirical (The Braag, RRP £7.50).  Participants are invited to stay afterwards for the book launch celebration. Thank you to South Asian Heritage Month Grants 2026, Welcome to Wandsworth and National Lottery Heritage Fund. This is a follow-on event from Voices of Wandsworth, that took place in July at Arches Lane Theatre, Battersea Power Station. #voicesofwandsworth #conversingwiththeghazal #poetryworkshops #poetrylovers #poetrycommunity

A few months ago my poem ‘The Wizard’s Attic’ about Hove Museum featured in the wonderful Carmen et Error (@thebraag) - thank you to editor @shortestwitch! I also read this poem at @thecommonpress for the pamphlet tour of the brilliant @zain.rishi. Here’s to more poems about whimsy and nostalgia and I suppose yearning 🔮 🧙 🧸 🌊 After a very busy first year of the PhD, I am returning to a more consistent poetry practice, but I am taking a break from submitting stuff for publication for a bit while I get back in touch with the things I love about writing (and try to stay off my darn phone). In the meantime, my main bit of news is that I will be reading from Grandmother’s House in Chichester on October 28th! See the last slide for details, though I’ll post about it more nearer the time, and hope to share details of more readings soon 📚

An Lochan Uaine burning this weekend and being used to try to douse the Ryvoan Bothy wildfire - didn’t think it would be the loch trying to survive when I wrote this poem. First published in Envoi, then in Skin the Rabbit (The Braag, 2025). Thinking of all the habitat and the creatures. And the folk fighting the fires, here and everywhere. A bylaw here, a plan to ban disposable BBQs there, but it’s the big shift we need. We all know that really, I’m sure. How to deal with the discomfort of change before someone personally puts our own feet to the fire? That’s the key I think. How?
