“fallow”, an exhibition of works by New City Arts Fellows Brielle DuFlon, Eboni Bugg, Elena Yu, and M. Pittman, opens at Welcome Gallery on Friday, September 6. Join us from 5-7:30PM for a free, public reception sponsored by @oakencroftfarmwinery . An artist talk will be given at 6PM. 🔗 Link in bio for more info. The exhibition will be on view at Welcome Gallery from September 6-25, 2024. We are so grateful to the people and organizations who joined with us this year to make the Fellowship possible. This 2024 Fellows were guided by the theme “fallow”, written by Guest Curator, MaKshya Tolbert. A partnership with @thebridgepai provided Fellows with month-long studio space grants at The Underground: A Center for Creative Collaboration. The Fellowship was supported by anonymous donors, the Anne & Gene Worrell Foundation, the Community Endowment Fund at @cvilleareacf , and Pam Sutton-Wallace and Maurice Wallace. —— ID: The image is an announcement for an art exhibition. It is divided into two horizontal sections. The top section has a light yellow background and black text. On the left side, it features the “new city arts” logo which consists of a square with an inward-pointing corner. On the right side, it states, “Opening Reception: September 6 | 5 – 7:30PM”. The bottom section comprises four vertically arranged photographs of people, each in its own column. From left to right: 1) A person with long straight hair wearing a black top, looking directly at the camera. 2) A person with short hair, wearing a sleeveless blue top, smiling warmly at the camera. 3) A person in a dynamic pose, dressed in a bodysuit with yellow and green ruffles reminiscent of lichen, climbing on a rocky surface. 4) A person with very short hair, wearing large hoop earrings, laughing with their eyes closed. The background of this section is the same light yellow as the top section. The text on this section reads, “fallow” in a large black italicized font. Below it, in smaller font, “Work by 2024 New City Arts Fellows,” followed by the names “Brielle DuFlon, Eboni Bugg, Elena Yu, & M. Pittman.”

Great studio shots by @lindseyleahy in my @newcityartsinitiative fellowship space at @thebridgepai! It was an honor to continue sowing the seeds (😅) of my ongoing Dust Jackets project this summer as one of New City Arts’ four “fallow” fellows. Our exhibition opens at Welcome Gallery on Friday, September 6 with an opening reception from 5-7:30. I’m excited to show alongside @thetripletruth @mpittmancreates and @brielleduflon and honored that @processdaily’s words will guide and grace visitors’ experience of the exhibition. 🌱 The 2024 New City Arts Fellowship invited a select group of artists to make work responding to the annual theme, fallow, written by Fellowship Guest Curator, MaKshya Tolbert. Following an open call and competitive application process, this year’s Artist Fellows were selected by a community panel. During month-long Fellowships that included a studio space grant and a stipend, these four artists considered their “fallow places”. MaKshya invited artists, “to your fallow place—that geographical, ecological, diasporic, and/or interior site where land, life, or living as you know it has folded, fallen apart, gone barren, turned over. This open residency call emerges from worn earth, the aftermath of tobacco and wheat, and the wake of plantation life across and beyond Central Virginia. What happens if we meet at our wounds? What do we make, when repair is our imperative?”

Celebrate the M-26-7 movement with us this Friday evening! “Cuba: Defending Socialism, Resisting Imperialism brings you voices from Cuba, a country fighting for social and economic justice, representing the aspirations of the poor and oppressed worldwide, building socialism in a capitalist world. The film demonstrates how vital Cuba is to the struggle for socialism in Britain and beyond. Featuring Cuban workers, this film explains how the Cuban people have set up their economy, constitution and social provision despite 50 years of imperialist attack, isolation and, since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Special Period.” Doors open at 6:30pm, movie starts at 7:00pm. Spellbound came in 4th overall at @sofriedpoetry! We came. We slayed. Shout out to the team! @seaux_sinister_gaming @thequietwarrior @brzthepoet @medusa.was.black These poets worked hard to represent Charlottesville, Virginia, and bring home medals. This is monumental. This is Spellbounds year of inception. We came out the gate, went straight into a slam season, sent a team to the largest regional poetry slam and placed amongst some of the top poets in the nation. Our teammate Breeze placed 3rd at the individual finals. Kamau took second at the Nerd Slam. Medusa took second at the slammasters slam. We left a mark. We did the unexpected. We are proud. We are full. And we are dripped out in these medals. #sofried2024 #sofried24 #spellboundpoetry #spellbound

Happy Mural Monday! 🌟🎨 Title: “Inspiration Across” (2023) Location: The Underground (306 E Main St) Muralist: Anica Marcelino (@__fxliz) Located at the entrance of The Underground, “Inspiration Across” is a free-handed mural dedicated to the creative influences at The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative. “Scattering the different creative tools and elements around the Bridge was my take on “Building Better Bridges”. I wanted the bold outlines and chaotic loud colors of the different art mediums to surround and “hold up” the bridge in the center. When I first stepped foot in the Underground, I had this big burst of enthusiasm and curiosity as an artist wanting to try and know various crafts. A place with a plethora of creative possibilities? On top of being able to share the space with other artists and make crazier masterpieces? I just had to capture all of that excitement and share that same feeling into one. This mural is my own way of reassuring the next wandering little creative to discover the Bridge for the first time.”
