Need a new 💻 laptop? Desktop? How many gigs on your hard drive
do you need? Windows? Apple OSX? Here are some great tips to help you
make an informed choice.

💻 A laptop’s processor matters. Basically, it is the laptop’s brain. Unless you are doing something processor intensive (like gaming or video editing), you won’t necessarily need the speed of the latest model. For what most people use; web access, media streaming, email,
word processing, spreadsheets etc a laptop or desktop which is a few years old will provide all you need in terms of functionality.

The more advanced and newer the processor is, the more expensive it’ll get.

💻 RAM (random access memory) is key to computer performance, especially if you do lots of multitasking on your laptop – e.g. edit photos, write word docs, and browse the web all at once. The more RAM you have, the faster your laptop will be able to access data, and the more applications you can run smoothly at any one time. 4GB of RAM is the minimum. If you use lots of high-power software, look for 8GB or more.

💻 Battery Life

Portability is important (even if that means transporting your laptop from your living room couch 🛋 to your bed!), battery life is something worth considering. The reality of a laptop’s battery life is often quite different to what it says on the box. Things like screen brightness and the types of programs you run will affect how long the battery 🔋 lasts.

Instead of focusing on the number of hours the manufacturer quotes, look at the rating of the battery in Watt-hours (Wh) or milliamp-hours (mAh). The bigger the number, the longer the battery will last.

💻 Operating systems are like your aesthetics: some people even bounce
between. Depending on what your preference is, you could either be a
Windows or Apple user or maybe you like the Chrome OS. Generally most
people prefer to stay with one ecosystem so it's easier to transfer data, files and photos from their phones to their laptops.
