The Mortenson Ranch with Kara West —

It was an incredible day of iPhone photography at the Mortenson Eaves Movie Ranch in Santa Fe this past week.

I had the opportunity to capture portraits of Kara West using just a single Profoto strobe and my iPhone 17 Pro Max.

I love the look of a single light source for portraits, and traveling with just one light keeps things simple. Of course, adding additional lights can be fantastic, but there’s something I really enjoy about seeing how much can be accomplished with one carefully placed light.

For this project, I used Adobe Photoshop and Generative Fill to enhance the final image, cleaning up the background, removing distractions, and adding the shadow on the back wall to help shape the light and focus attention on Kara.

Swipe left to see my original photograph and compare it with the finished image. You’ll see how I refined the scene while preserving the lighting, character, and feeling of the original capture.

My 40 years of experience in photography plays a critical role in this process. Understanding light, composition, exposure, and movement gives me the foundation to guide AI toward the results I want to achieve. For me, AI is another creative tool, but the photographer still needs to know where they want to take the image.
