Room magazine is urgently fundraising to continue running our organization.

For over 50 years, our small nonprofit has carved out a space in “Canadian”literary publishing where underrepresented voices can thrive. We publish work by people of all marginalized genders, making a special effort to centre BIPOC, queer, and disabled voices, with longstanding partnerships with @indigenousbrilliance and @unboundreadingseries. We are committed to solidarity with global struggles against imperialism and capitalist extraction. To date, we’ve published over 2,500 writers from marginalized communities, organized over 500 literary events, and published almost 200 issues of our magazine.

Unfortunately, our staff have been facing enormous strain since 2025 due to a key staff member’s sudden departure. This difficult transition period required us to pause operations, which included printing issues, processing submissions, applying for grants, reconciling accounts, and conducting other vital operational activities.

The events of 2025, and the mismanagement leading up to it, puts Room’s survival at risk in a way that cannot be resolved without community support. We are struggling, with staff working unpaid overtime and at great personal detriment, taking on large amounts of work that are outside of their job descriptions, to keep the lights on.

Given the recent shutdowns of feminist publishers like Jezebel and Bitch Media, feminist literature is more crucial than ever, especially in times of rising fascism and book bans. Room is one of the most integrally diverse spaces in “Canadian” publishing today, and we need your help to keep it that way.

Please check out our galabid fundraiser, featuring generous donations by beloved presses, writers, artists, arts and culture organizations, and more.

We know $80k may sound like a huge sum, but if each of our 28k followers donated $5, we would meet our goal immediately. We know, too, that times are hard for everyone—we’re far from the only ones fundraising—and appreciate every bit you’re able to spare.

In solidarity,
Room

I picked these up at the summer poetry teachers institute, where my team of educators may or may not have created the best introduction to a multi-form poetry lesson plan ever planned!
One day, my reading room will rival the @poetryfoundation libraries collection.
But until then, we read what we can get our hands on.
The poetry foundations noncirculating collection of poetry and poetry adjacent literature is open and free to the public from 11-5 Wednesday-Saturday.

“‘Roy Miki and the Downbeats,’ the pop rock group he formed as an undergraduate at the University of Manitoba (United College), which gave followers and fans in the canteens in and around Winnipeg a dose of live medleys of Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, and other early rock and R & B acts. It paid for their amps and their cars, which gave them the mobility to be heard. The band eventually proved too time-consuming for the studious lead singer/rhythm guitarist, so Miki’s gig with the Downbeats came unplugged. However, his glimpse of what he could do with words and performance would come in handy in the years to come.“

Um, how did our director of ceremonies find the time to do all of this during the PNW Creatives Summit? We honestly still don’t know. 😅 And can we talk about what a natural she is on camera?!

Somehow between hosting, connecting, and keeping the energy high, @asiyahgoesleft also managed to chat with some of the incredible book and magazine publishers who joined us at Publishers House and wow, what a lineup.

Take a peek at some of the amazing publishers and imprints helping shape storytelling across BC and the Yukon. The future of publishing is collaborative, creative, and very much alive in the Pacific Northwest 🌲📖
