Québec City’s The Carringtons bring a restless mix of garage rock, punk and power pop to “Emptiness,” a track from their new album The Reunion. There are flashes of The Strokes and The Hives in its wiry energy, while the melodic urgency recalls Buzzcocks and the rougher edges of The Hellacopters.

What gives “Emptiness” its character is the tension between that forward momentum and a song concerned with something far less certain. Beneath the swagger is a sense of absence and dissatisfaction, the feeling that all the noise and movement around you can’t necessarily fill whatever is missing.

That contrast keeps the song from becoming straightforward garage-rock revivalism. The Carringtons understand the appeal of those influences but play with enough personality and urgency to make “Emptiness” feel immediate rather than nostalgic.

The Reunion, released October 2, finds the Québec City band returning with plenty of energy intact. “Emptiness” makes a strong case for catching up with them.

‘EMPTINESS’ is kind of the emotional and sonic apex of the album. With a chorus that sticks in your head after just one listen, it naturally became the focus track on our new record. For this one, we wanted the drums to be tight, punchy, repetitive, and as close to a drum machine as possible. Dave absolutely nailed it by adapting his playing. He normally plays with a lot of feel and hits incredibly hard. Alex’s bass line is also really cool, super tight, and we added a few extra layers along the way, including Joey’s synth sequence, which I reversed at the very last minute. And when the guitars kick in, they hit like a -40 Arctic blast...The album has been out since Friday!
