Bedford Cine Van is a big draw at the GeDee Museum

Bedford is a name that many know of in this country as the maker of trucks and buses post independence by the combined Hindustan Motors - General Motors outfit.

However, it was present in India much before independence as many trucks and buses can over from the UK for service across the length and breadth of our land. One such unit, and a truly specialised one at that is among the commercial vehicle gems at the GeDee Automotive Museum in Coimbatore.

This 1931 Bedford model was configured in an all-metal body form to house a cine unit cum vanity van by Pakshiraja Studios of Coimbatore. This industrial city in Tamil Nadu was also in the forefront of the emerging Tamil cinema industry and Pakshiraja Studios was supposedly a very big name then.

In the interior it had editing machines, audio equipment plus also an artist’s lounge.

Whenever we speak and refer to vintage vehicles, it is mostly to marvel at the turnout and restoration of cars but this Bedford is superbly turned out with none of the over restoration we see many a time. If ever you happen to visit Coimbatore, the GeDee Museum has to be on your must visit list and there you must spend time with this exquisite Bedford.

We start an all new series which would appear occasionally every week and we kick this off with two exquisite examples of mobility on land and in the air. One a thoroughbred workhorse (an oxymoron if ever there was one) in the form of the Douglas DC-3 Dakota and the Bugatti Type 44 being the classic that was revered the world over.

The Dakota emerged in the mid-1930s and saw action as a commercial aircraft as well as action during World War II using its C-47 Skytrain designation. Many would have thought the Dakota’s flying days were numbered after WWII had ended but it wafted across steadily and reliably for at least another 4 decades and some are yet flying the world over.

French marque Bugatti epitomised the nearest a car could be flying on terra firma with its exquisite small cars with their jewel like motors and sheer artistry of components. The success of the Type 35 emboldened Ettore Bugatti and his son Jean to go higher up the pecking order and create masterpieces like this Type 44.

Both the Douglas DC-3 Dakota and the Bugatti Type 44 are from the eclectic Diljeet Titus Collection, a collection lovingly curated and constantly being added to. Fitting that this Classics & Thoroughbred series opened with these stunners.

The Collectors Workshop in Dubai is a veritable treasure trove of talents, skills and capabilities which is what you need when you need to breathe new life into an old classic or resurrect an old wreck back to its original state.

I was fortunate to come to know of The Collectors Workshop on a recent visit to Dubai and was personally shown around by the very amiable Vijayan Pillai whose brainchild this out fit is. The quality of the word done by Vijayan’s 25-strong team of mechanics, engineers and researchers lead by Vijayan himself and supervised by his nephews Praveen and Pramod across all sorts of cars which come to get the top class treatment. Be it vintage cars to the great classics (as we depicted by the Packard straight eight in the video) to many modern sports cars to cars for the high and mighty, Vijayan’s team has excelled with them all.

I had already given a glimpse of the type of projects that The Collectors Workshop does when I had posted a reel on the ex-Bahawalpur 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III last week and the that quality turnout is Vijayan’s calling card. Can’t beat that, can you?

This one is a prized 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III carrying coachwork by Barker. This sort of a large and imposing bodywork was invariably ordered on the PIII chassis by Indian royalty and as I have mentioned in my book Classics & Thoroughbreds published in 2010, there were 25 examples of this highly complex V12-engined automobile that came to India directly as first sales while further research has thrown up that there could have been another dozen or so which came up via secondary sales. Just for the record, only a dozen or so yet reside and roll on Indian terra firma.

Keeping numbers aside this car was ordered by the Nawab of Bahawalpur which was then in undivided India and post partition it vested in Pakistan. Bahawalpur had some great machines in its ample stables including many gems from the Nawab of Bhopal’s garages including the highly potent Mercedes-Benz SS hunting car with the very special Thrupp & Maberley coachwork. This car was sadly spirited away from Bahawalpur and legend has it that its hunting coachwork was discarded and left to rot to this day in the Palace grounds there but that’s not the focus of this story.

This Phantom III, was entrusted for a full ground up restoration to The Collectors Workshop in Dubai and this is where the story gets interesting. This fabulous facility in Al Quez Dubai is run by the very respected and very capable Vijayan Pillai along with his two nephews and a workforce which consists of a bunch of very talented and skilled craftsman and mechanics.

And the fun fact is that Vijayan and his team also restored a Rolls-Royce Phantom V for Yohan Poonawalla over the course of the last couple of years and which is well known here in Indian classic car circles! As you can now deduce The Collectors Workshop is THE go to place if you want to get your classic brought back to life.
