“Lights up.” Adira ceases to exist, if even only for a moment, and Winnie Ortega manifests.

A woman with questions, grief, reaching across time for another woman whose name has outlived the breath that carried it.

I have found myself preoccupied with memory lately; with what we keep, what we lose, what we inherit, and what becomes of a life when those left behind are entrusted with its telling.

Through Winnie, that work continues. She reaches for Nanny, and I reach with her. Beyond the legend. Beyond the monument. Beyond the name we were taught to remember. Toward the woman herself.

There is so much we do not know, and so much we cannot verify. But she is remembered. Carried from one generation to another, beyond what history could record and what time could preserve.

Nanny. Woman. Keeper. Protector. Leader. A life lived before it became history; a memory carried long enough to become inheritance.

There is a particular responsibility in telling the stories of those who can no longer correct us. Memory is imperfect. History, too. So I do not seek to possess her story, nor pretend I could contain it. That is impossible. I stand where Winnie stands: before her, listening.

If only for a moment, may memory make room for her to live again
