tldr: cinema is so back

This movie meant a lot to me.I love old tamil movies and songs, I grew up with them. Recently, Tamil Cinema has reached a saturated all time high where glorification of toxic masculinity, objectification or insignificant characterization of women roles seems to be the norm. I thought gone was the Kollywood that made Aval Oru Thodarkathai, Mouna Ragam, and even the 2000s rom-coms. These movies had women who were inspiring and empowering. The dialogues, music, everything were on another level that films days cannot even replicate let alone create/innovate.

With Dorothy, all of my love for Tamil cinema is back in full force, such promising direction, acting, music, and literally everything else. The characterization of all the women in this movie was inspiring, made me embrace my own feminine side more. Though they were fitted into stereotypes of nurturing and caring, i felt it was shown as a humane trait rather than a feminine one. There's just so much I can say about Karthik Subburaj's writing and conviction to make this movie. Raja's score is something that I cannot even put into words to appreciate. I could reiterate what Mysskin said and quote 'I 'm realising i was born with ears just to listen to his music'. I'm glad I can understand tamil so I can read his heartfelt lyrics, although Muthumani is favourite, whenever the haunting first notes of Kanagamani and How else to name it begin, I can physically feel my lungs lose air. I am yet to listen to Kanagamani fully without worrying about my respiratory health.

I'm glad this movie has shown women in a beautiful light. I truly felt the power of womanhood and how it can change people for the better. Through this film, I hope people can do more than sympathize and recognise minorities, consider them just as human as them, equally deserving of love, friendship and community. Here's a small piece to celebrate Dorothy, for finding herself and finding love 🩷

My sincere gratitude to @ksubbaraj @sananth__ @iam_rishikanth @ilaiyaraaja_offl @keerthysureshofficial @jeeva_subramaniam.offl and @dop_tirru
