POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

For years my birthday has consisted of different annual activities. Patterns emerged:

As a kid, my parents planned the birthday parties of course. He-Man and magicians were two of the themes I can still recall.

When I was a teenager my preference was to go with 3 or 4 of my closest friends to see a movie. I still remember 2 of those years being "What About Bob?" And "Soapdish."

When I was in my twenties I enjoyed gathering large groups of friends, and we played beach volleyball and had large dinners together every year.

For most of my thirties, I would rope off multiple rows of the beautiful Westwood theaters, and gather many dozens of friends to watch a movie. Selections included "Deadpool 2" and Will Smith's "Aladdin." Not all movies were winners, but the gatherings were epic.

Now, for most of my forties, I'm taking my love of movies, combining it with my preference of quality time with small groups, and basically going on movie binges.

On my birthday this year I was supposed to spend the day in the theater, watching 5 movies with friends, but being a parent became apparent (see what I did there?), when Natalia woke up just sick enough to miss school, but not nearly sick enough to actually be concerned. Our friend @crouchedinjungles salvaged the day by watching the kids after work and allowing us to still get out to a few flicks.

A make-up date was rescheduled for my all day movie binge thanks to my wonderful in-laws. The night before, we went to watch the hysterical show "Gutterplum" performed by our uber-talented friend @courtneypauroso. Then the next day, joined by a few movie-loving friends, we binged movies for over 12 hours straight. It was glorious!

And yes. This is how I roll. For now. I still have some birthdays left until my midlife crisis brings something new.

What a time to be a Jew! As a 2024 fellow of the @thejwinitiative I’ve had the honor to spend this past year writing a new feature script, a horror movie set at a summer camp in the Catskills.

Could not have imagined when I applied with a nugget of an idea that I’d get in, let alone be blessed with new friends, mentors, and development support.

Could also not have imagined 10/7—just two days before I got my acceptance letter—and the insane, unrelenting, impossible year since. It’s all in the script, if not for the north star that was the writing of which, I don’t know what I would’ve done.

Big shout to the organizers for their generosity of time and resources, and for putting together such a smart, kind cohort. Fellow fellows, it has been a joy to get to know you.

More on the script soon! For now, back to writing ✍️

March things

1️⃣ the Boothe nuptials in ATX (not pictured: my brother and his incredible family that drove up just to have lunch with us)

2️⃣ My aunt Rina who took me to see theatre mere moments after I landed in Tel Aviv (not pictured: all of my feelings - theatre is magic)

3️⃣ The reason for the season - an extraordinary fellowship that took me and 9 others to Tel Aviv to meet with filmmakers and TV writers/executives/producers - my heart is full, inspired and proud.

4️⃣ these gorgeous humans who I did super intense life with for 10 days in Israel - including a very brief sing along on the bus from the desert

5️⃣ A living example of the FB status “it’s complicated.” Also a woman yelled at me for using my phone near the Kotel on Shabbat. Whoops. (Not pictured, the kind shopkeeper who shared special Ramadan bread with me after we spoke for a while about how he’s been enduring the last few months)

6️⃣ the hiking - Ein Gedi oasis - you know, the one from the Bible (not pictured: incredible wildlife)

7️⃣ can’t not jump in a desert waterfall. Cold cold cold and refreshing.

8️⃣ every meal on the trip was infinity courses of delicious generous portions .

9️⃣ found out I booked a job on my flight home. Drove straight from customs to the studio. (Kinda pictured: insane jet lag)

🔟 last date night of the month - run, don’t walk, to Anajak Thai on Ventura in Sherman Oaks. It’s absolutely worth the hype.

I have so many more feelings to process about this month - about being home with my whole extended family, about watching an entertainment industry reel and figure out what the right response is, about not having to police my own language, about jokes… and I’ll get to it.
