Congratulations to North Sound Program Lead, Jeff Sturm, on receiving the 2026 Pat Herdt Education Award from the Washington State Council of Fly Fishers International!

What began as a vision to bring Project Healing Waters opportunities to veterans throughout the North Puget Sound region has grown into a thriving community serving veterans across nearly 9,000 square miles of Northwest Washington.

Through Jeff's leadership, dedication, and passion for service, dozens of veterans have discovered fly fishing and experienced the healing power of connection through renewed confidence, meaningful friendships, new skills, improved well-being, and a deeper connection to the outdoors.

The Pat Herdt Education Award recognizes outstanding contributions to fly fishing education, and Jeff's impact on both the veteran and fly fishing communities makes him a deserving recipient. His commitment to service has helped grow the North Sound Project Healing Waters Program to three satellite locations and nearly 100 veteran and active-duty participants.

But Jeff would be the first to point out that this recognition belongs to many people. While he may captain the North Sound ship, its success belongs to an incredible team of veterans, volunteers, donors, local businesses, and community partners who generously share their time, talents, and resources. Together, they have built something truly special.

Project Healing Waters is powered by people who show up, lend a hand, share a conversation, and remind veterans that they are not alone. Those connections make a difference, and that is where healing begins.

Please join us in congratulating Jeff and celebrating the entire North Sound team for this well-earned recognition. Thank you to everyone who helps make this mission possible.

What a week! A few SFMs and friends headed north and fished for big ol’ trout on the Upper Columbia River. A huge THANK YOU to the guides, staff and crew @blackbearlodge2010 for hosting us and to @theeveninghatch and @theportlandflyshop for putting this together and inviting us. It was a great experience to fish new-to-us water and to enjoy relaxing down time at your beautiful lodge. We learned a LOT and will be talking about this one for a long time to come!
