Have you tried unplugging it and plugging it back in?That’s what the huge sign says overtop of a service desk of a vancouver computer store. Well let me tell you that it sure works for humans as well. There’s nothing actually wrong with you except that you need a reboot. That’s what I’ve been doing for the past 25 years, unplugging and living one week of the year in the desert. Blackrock city is made up of scientists, film makers, doctors, software writers, architects, musicians, business owners, professors, spiritual teachers, craftsmen and even monks from all over the World. Art is the dominant theme throughout. One goal I had was to find and meet with inventors that could teach me how to build the perfect steam bath heater.
No emails, home or work problems for a week as cell phones don’t work there. It’s strangely relaxing to put your wallet away for a week. You do your own provisioning for complete self reliance before you enter the temporary 50,000 to 80,000 person city. Once you have entered every bit of food, drink or experience is gifted by other residents. Water tho, is like gold and everyone needs to bring their own. It’s takes on average about 1.5 gallons per day to survive and clean yourself.
It’s child like fun to dance and ride petal bikes around the desert looking at art. Or take one of the hundreds of workshops ranging from yoga, raising your consciousness to living life slightly off center of the spectrum.
I’ve made another whole set of friends there.
The mountain people that I’ve brought thrive the most with their ability to plans meals, camp out, navigate in storms and handle harsh weather but if you don’t have the gear and know how then you can join one of the large camps and share skills and facilities much like in the default world. The heat, cold and sand storms can be deadly but suffering is a huge part of the healing that the desert offers.
Overall the week long experience is sort of like going to school, a New Year’s Eve party, a family reunion, church and Halloween all rolled into one. I’m coming back to Whistler fully juiced up with ideas and inspired to take on another year of creation. #burningman #artist #dancing #escape #enjoy
