Field Notes, On the Dream That Waited I took this photo of the moon outside Pillar Forum last Monday night. It was the fourth day of being part of a short feature film production, and I could feel myself beginning to chart all the roads that led me there. As a kid, I made movies with my siblings and friends on an old video camera. There was a spark then. The joy of being inside something. Part of something. A dream with no language yet. Did it die in the years after? Or did it just go dormant? Waiting for the right time. The right place. The right people. Fast forward. I meet Sarah. Someone steeped in a deep love of photography. I admired that love before I understood it. Before I knew it might become something I could love too. Fast forward. I’m on a dance floor. I meet Kathleen. A shared love of dance, music, community. We become friends. Fast forward again. I get a text. Do you want to be part of a production? Fast forward. I’m having coffee with Jamey at Pillar Forum. I say yes. Rewind. I’m going through the motions of college, wondering why I’m studying to work in social services. Rewind. I’m sitting in our dad’s garage pretending to be Al Capone while my brother records me with the family camcorder. Fast forward. I’m packing my gear for day one of production. Fast forward. I’m ascending the 5th Street Towers. I step through the door. I do what I know how to do. I talk to people. I meet people. I laugh. I joke. I take photos. Actors. Film crews. Audio crews. Producers. Script readers. PAs. People moving around each other like a living machine, all trying to make one impossible thing real. Day two. “You’re the BTS photographer, right?” “What’s BTS?” “Behind the scenes.” Oh. Yeah. That’s what I’m doing. Maybe this dream is alive now. Day four ends. I am exhausted. Unable to leave my bed. It didn’t used to be like this. But it is like this now. Was it worth it? I think so. Would I do it again? Most certainly. And if you were looking up at the moon Monday night, know that we were looking up at the same moon. Know that I felt part of something. I was part of something. Look how much darkness this little light survived inside.
