MORE THAN MY PAST MENTORSHIP | “MY STORY MATTERS” It was an honor to kick off this 12-week program for young ladies currently navigating the welfare & judicial systems. As I looked at them, I saw the girl I used to be. A girl who never met someone like me, with a story like mine & thought, “One day, that could be me.” I didn’t have the blueprint. So I became her. That is the invaluable power of lived-experience & representation— an impact only someone who has walked it can make. My past tried to bury me— but I’m still standing because what tried to destroy me did not get the final say. That’s the power of testimony. I speak from scars & as living proof that your worst chapter does not have to become your whole story. That’s why these young ladies matter to me. I know what it feels like to need someone to look beyond the behavior & say, “There is more in you.” I’m here to remind them: They hold the pen!🖊️ Their past may be part of their story, but it does not author their destiny. Two different events, two different cities in the same day! Closed out September simply grateful to just be able! 🩷 From my Annual NICU Giveaway, supporting NICU staff, babies, and families, to my National Literacy Month Foster Care Book Distribution, providing all brand NEW educational & activity workbooks, coloring books, and reading books to children in foster care—September was a powerful reminder of why I do what I do. One of the most meaningful parts was hearing about the NICU families that have read my debut book, Little Orphan Ashley™️, that is in the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Library. The first chapter of my series as a NICU patient turned warrior— that serves as a reminder to families that their NICU infant’s story is not over—that miracles do happen & can live far beyond the NICU, just as it did for me.🩷 My mission continues: advancing literacy, creating access & making an immediate, meaningful difference in the lives of children & families. September 8th is International Literacy Day—and literacy goes far beyond simply reading & writing. It’s about comprehension, knowing how to apply information & understanding how to advocate for yourself. I wrote the Surviving Foster Care Guide from a deeply personal & informed perspective. As the daughter of one of Michigan’s most accomplished high profile attorneys, with some of the highest settlements in state history, I grew up surrounded by the legal world & excellence. While attending college in Michigan, I also interned for Attorney Mr. Rohl. As the daughter, niece, and sister of attorneys, I understand firsthand how powerful knowledge of the law can be—and how life-changing that knowledge can be for someone navigating the foster care system without it. As a minority woman, 2x orphan, and foster care survivor, I recognized that this guide was necessary. To date, it is the first guide of its kind written from this unique lived perspective. This book was carefully researched, studied, researched again, and intentionally developed with trauma informed care so that it could be understood & easily implemented. And I’m incredibly proud to see the Surviving Foster Care Guide already made its way to California since its release this spring—home to the nation’s largest foster care population.
