This holiday season, I’m on a mission to create a truly special Christmas gift for my father, and I need your help!

As a proud relative of Frederick Law Olmsted, my father has always had an immense passion for the outdoors—a love he’s passed down to me through the art of masonry. Over the years, he’s taught me how to build stone walls and incorporate elements like pergolas that beautifully blend with nature.

This year, I’d love to honor his legacy and efforts by creating a detailed layout of our property, located just outside of Boston, in a booklet format. My vision is to highlight the many plant species he’s planted, detailing their beauty and significance—a heartfelt tribute to his dedication to our landscape.

If you or someone you know has expertise in forestry, landscape design, or graphic design, I’d be so grateful to connect. Your insight or collaboration could help bring this gift to life in a way that truly reflects his love for nature.

Thank you in advance for any recommendations or ideas!

Happy 200th birthday to Frederick Law Olmstead, the creator of so many of our beautiful parks and places of urban nature, an environmentalist, and a true visionary. I’ve been reading his biography and decided what better way to celebrate his birthday than to take him with me to one of his masterpieces and his most well known project, @centralparknyc. He is a very important figure to me, as places he created have been dear to my heart in the cities that are most part of my life story - Detroit, Boston, and NYC. I’ve been working on a project dedicated to him and was hoping to complete it by today, but still have a long way to go. Perhaps can be done during this bicentennial year. Either way, thank you Fred Law (as he was called in childhood) for all you have done, and the ripple effect of inspiration you have had for centuries. I feel very blessed to be able to spend so much time in this incredible spot you brought to city dwellers here in New York, and I feel extra happy to be able to be here on your birthday.

Happy Fred-Law birthday to you all!

COURAGE
The opposite of indifference

@centralparknyc “All classes largely represented, with a common purpose, each individual adding by his mere presence to the pleasure of all others, all helping to the greater happiness of each.”—Frederick Law Olmsted, landscape architect, social reformer and believer in public parks as a democratic ideal. #happybirthday #200 @thefredolmsted #centralparkconservatorygarden #centralparknycbenches #courage #theoppositeofindifference #myfauxpas #procrastinationskiss

"If we analyze the operations of scenes of beauty upon the mind, and consider the intimate relation of the mind upon the nervous system and the whole physical economy, the action and reaction which constantly occur between bodily and mental conditions, the reinvigoration which results from such scenes is readily comprehended. . . . The enjoyment of scenery employs the mind without fatigue and yet exercises it; tranquilizes it and yet enlivens it; and thus, through the influence of the mind over the body gives the effect of refreshing rest and reinvigoration to the whole system." - Frederick Law Olmsted // 🌲🌲

FLO was a landscape architect who crafted Highland, Genesee, and Seneca parks. He’s also the reason I scratched by LARCH 60 in college—my only D ever 🙃.

Thanks for all of the above sir.

And yes, the sky was straight up THAT blue.

Frederick Law Olmsted and his partner, Calvert Vaux, spent 20 years (1878-1896) working on the Emerald Necklace, a delicately strung carcanet of jewel-like parks connecting ponds from Brookline to Jamaica Plain, extending from Boston Common to Franklin Park. His vision included “places for both active and passive recreation; green and open spaces offering relief and refreshment.” During this time, the two landscape architects also worked on the massive Olmsted Park system that nearly defines urban life in Buffalo, NY. It consists of six major parks designed and built between 1868 and 1894, as well as stunningly landscaped traffic circles, broad parkways, and lush pocket parks.
.
In addition to changing the way urban parks functioned and served, Olmsted considered himself a “Socialist Democrat,” and his work reflected a firm belief that the government should create institutions of education, culture, and recreation for American workers.

The year-long centennial celebrations for Frederick Law Olmsted will commence today honoring the visionary landscape architect who beautified nineteenth-century America and created such parks and public spaces as New York’s Central Park, the U.S. Capitol grounds to Stanford University’s campus.

Olmsted, who was born April 26, 1822, also played a role in preserving Yosemite and Niagara Falls. If you want to learn more, Justin Martin also wrote a compelling biography called, “Genius of Place: The Life of Frederick Law Olmsted.”

I’m just in awe of how much he created and grateful for this one man’s vision. The parks he created, notes Martin, weren’t merely masterpieces from an aesthetic standpoint. Behind his designs, there also was his intent to elevate the lives of his fellow citizens and revitalize cities by creating more green space.

Doesn’t that sound like something we are all thinking about today? And guess how many flowers bloom in Central Park? Over 452 flowering plants.
