Poet and activist Sonia Sanchez, a founder of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and ‘70s, was a distinguished professor of English and black literature at Temple University for more than two decades, from her appointment in 1977 until her retirement in 1999.

Sanchez was born in Birmingham, Ala., on Sept. 9, 1934, and moved to Harlem, N.Y., in her youth. Her love of language grew from listening to her grandmother’s rhythmic African-American dialect.

After graduating from Hunter College in 1955, Sanchez, carrying poems in her purse, took graduate courses in creative writing at New York University. She later taught at the Downtown Community School.

In 1967, she helped establish one of the first Black Studies departments in the country at San Francisco State University. Her first book of poetry, “Home Coming” was published in 1969. Its follow-up, “We a BaddDDD People,” was published a year later.

Sanchez taught at Manhattan Community College in the early 1970s—before she says she was blackballed by universities in the city because of her activism. From 1972-74, she taught at Amherst College, and was founding chair of its Black Studies Department. She was Temple’s first presidential fellow.

Her “Homegirls & Handgrenades” won the American Book Award in 1985. Her most recent collection, “Morning Haiku,” was published in 2010.

Also a playwright, such as her work, “The Bronx Is Next,” and a children’s author, such as her book, “It’s A New Day: Poems for Young Brothas and Sistuhs,” Sanchez has written more than a dozen books.

An in-demand speaker, she has been a guest lecturer at more than 500 universities in the United States, Canada, China, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, and Africa.

In 2012, she was named the first poet laureate of Philadelphia. #history #blackhistory #philadelphia #thehistoryofblackphiladelphia #blackwomen

#sealeychallenge #sealeychallenge2026 #thesealeychallenge keeping it audio with a classic album, Full Moon of Sonia by Sonia Sanchez (while bringing in a track by @urucker and @thefullestmoon - the fullest moon id is connected to the documentary on a celebration of this album, led by @karensmithdrums and making the rounds on the film circuit. I got to share one poem then in connection with the incredible Elijah Pringle @elijahpringle3 poet and vocalist). One of the early times meeting Mama Professor Genius Poet Laureate People’s Conscience Sonia Sanchez was on her tour of this album at UNC. I went to a workshop she gave, and I remember standing next to her in the circle, how she held my hand, the vibrant pulse of her hand, like she was a conduit of a sacred energy, giving so much, even her personal address to all gathered. Some time later she chose my book with Christian Campbell’s as finalists for the Cave Canem Book Prize (Constance Quarterman Bridges won for Lions don’t eat us) … and we got to read together in New York. This life! In every meeting, she has been generous. Hold Me remains my favorite track for its pacing, the balance of poem and song, the reaching and closing question, which is so hard to do well, but there are so many other tracks/poems I love. These days I’m running a lot so this month may be mostly audio for the challenge. I hope this is an invitation to the ear and the heart.
