We’re delighted to welcome Dr Rebecca Jane McConnell to Women in Architecture for this week’s featured guest takeover - some of you may know her from her viral reels over at @thefutureblueprint! Rebecca is an architect, researcher and content creator based in Ireland. She holds a PhD in Architecture from Queen’s University Belfast and currently works as a Research Scientist at University College Dublin, exploring the relationship between architecture, systems and the future of our built world. Alongside academia, Rebecca co-founded @critbay, a platform supporting emerging architects, and runs The Future Blueprint, where she explores architecture, design and the invisible environment. Outside architecture, Rebecca is a mum to a toddler, a wife and a keen traveller who loves exploring new places and finding creative ways to tell stories. She is passionate about showing students that an architecture degree can open doors to careers far beyond traditional practice. We’re excited to have Rebecca taking over our page this week and sharing more about her work, experiences and journey in architecture. Welcome, Rebecca!

20K of you here!! WOW I’m a week late with this post 😅 but hey A little over 6 months ago I started this account not really knowing what I was doing. I’m a millennial with an innate dislike for cameras so recording myself talking felt like the worst possible idea 🙈 But we pushed through and with it I realised people actually really enjoyed my love for the details in architecture (so being an architecture geek does pay off eventually!!) QEII Alternate Bridge Competition St James’ Park, London, UK Competition entry to @thefutureblueprint QEII Alternate Bridge Competition. For the purpose of the competition the submission had to be produced in under an hour. Original competition text “Whatever your position on the British monarchy Queen Elizabeth Il’s reign was ultimately about transition, ushering in a new era of the United Kingdom. Consequently the brief of a bridge seems fitting. As a monarch, politically neutral, the Queen represented a figurehead for the people of her nation and as opposed to celebrating the crown alone this proposal aims to put people at its heart. Alongside fulfiling it’s role as a crossing route the bridge provides cantilevering overflow and breakout platforms for users to view and photograph the park and palace beyond. Additional seating and opportunities for pause and rest are provided. The steel structure is intended to be fully demountable with it’s modular frame allowing the bridge to potentially be removed or adapted in the future. The timber surface offers a carbon effective, tactile finish.”
