Great grandson of August Sander, Manuel Sander in New Orleans in 2009 with artist Anne Katrine Senstad on their site specific installation of the video trilogy Light Writes Always in Plural - Light Displacement, Section I, II, III (2005-2009) - at The Brickyard with KK Projects during Prospect 1. The video trilogy was edited by Senstad and Sander, and sound design by Manuel Sander. Also shown at Elga Wimmer Gallery, New York, VIBA, Buenos Aires, Paris Photo, Bjorn Ressle Gallery, New York.

Julian Sander is a visionaire who has curated himself into Paris Photo history. Listen to our conversation on his legendary contribution of bringing his great-grandfather’s People of the 20th Century in its entirety to last year’s fair. We also discuss his photo collecting application Collekton — a decade long project to democratize the wealth of knowledge of this iconic collection.

Having encountered a dozen of Julian’s exquisitely curated Paris Photo exhibitions, I have not ceased to be amazed at their conceptual depth — each seriously provocative, intellectually rigorous and good-naturedly witty. Striking, elegant and erudite - just like the gallerist himself. His floor to ceiling grid of 619 silver gelatin portraits of 20th-century Germans photographed by his legendary great-grandfather, August Sander is now Julian’s legend too.

Art & making the impossible possible

When a friend and highly valued business partner calls you and wants to share the vision of realizing an unprecedented booth at one of the world's most important art fairs - 619 works on a 36-metre running surface at a height of 4 metres - you frown at first, react with appreciation and communicate your doubts - how is this supposed to work (?) - in an attenuated form.😅

What Julian Sander @thegeepee has realized with his family and his team @galeriejuliansander at the last #ParisPhotoFair is incredible and overwhelming. I have been to many international art fairs over the past 15 years and therefore share the opinion of many experienced gallery owners and visitors at the fair that you have never seen anything like this before and won't see anything like it again for a long time - perhaps never again. It was a truly magical moment and shows what is possible, even if the idea seemed unrealistic at first.

The fact that we were able to contribute to the realization of this mega-project with our valued network partners is an outstanding feeling. The art market is anything but simple, but moments like this are what make it so special.

The Pastry Chef

“Michael Somoroff’s Absence of Subject is a poignant homage to the legendary photographer August Sander’s monumental work People of the 20th Century (Menschen des 20 Jahrhunderts). It is a thoughtful and passionate meditation on memory, imagination, human resilience and creativity.

The originality in this body of work is based on Somoroff’s keen sense of observation and interpretation. Absence of Subject lets you revisit August Sander’s work allowing you to understand the richness of Sander’s intent. In each of August Sander’s pictures Michael Somoroff has erased the subject retaining only the background. The unprecedented digital revolution has brought the potential for manipulation into focus. Through the use of software Somoroff has taken out what we have always believed to be the “essential element” — the subject, the portrait. The backgrounds once a secondary fragment, now become the primary motivator. They have now been translated into new fully conceived images that rightfully belong to the “post-modern” idiom.”

People of the 20th Century ⏰ For the first time in Europe, @galeriejuliansander will be showing August Sander’s landmark work, People of the 20th Century, in its 🌟entirety🌟 at this year’s @parisphotofair 🔍

The hanging of the more than six hundred prints takes into account the affiliation of the sitters to certain groups, as August Sander had intended or as suggested by art historical reconstruction. The arrangement of the groups in a consistent spiral form, in which the different portfolios are arranged around each other without further curatorial intervention, leads to new, random and unexpected encounters. Representatives from the most diverse social contexts meet here. In this way, the presentation is able to vividly demonstrate the diversity of characters and the simultaneity of different social realities and phenomena, which are also constitutive for every society today. It is Sander’s deeply humanitarian attitude and his unwavering interest in the human condition that are visible here and lend his project the relevance and timelessness that he himself recognized in it: “The work, which is more like a depiction than a critique, will shed light on our time and people, and the more time passes, the more valuable it becomes.”
