✨ Congratulations @annadempsey on winning the inaugural Hilary Mantel Prize for Fiction!! ✨

Her stunning novel This Is About an Alligator and Nothing Else is a coming of age story set in Florida, exploring love, loss, and the relationships that ground us & shape our embodied & imaginative lives.

Written following her father’s death, the novel explores personal loss alongside grief for the natural environment, capturing in vivid technicolour both the Florida Everglades & the bewildering uncertainty of growing up.

I was so privileged to supervise Anna’s @universityofbristol + @uniofbath PhD and to witness this beautiful novel coming into being. I couldn’t be prouder of her tremendous achievement.

🌟 Huge congratulations, Anna!

this month with spare ribs; our seasonal supper club in collaboration with @louellaberryman, accompanying our november book ‘the gilded ones’ - an apple shrub on arrival, marinated mushroom and pickled red onion toasts to start, followed by a feast of delica pumpkin with maple pepita salsa macha and salted yog, green chilli & coriander celeriac remoulade, wild rice & radicchio salad with nutty feta relish, ending with a sticky pear cake served with miso butterscotch sauce.

plus our monthly life drawing class and creative writing workshop with @thegrove.writes - reaching new audiences and members as we approach the depths of winter.

Some books I’m reading at the moment! You might be wondering, why all the books on fundamentalist religion? It’s reading inspiration for my debut novel 🌝

Anna in Mawnan Smith, Cornwall.

There’s nothing like a road trip the long way round to get to know each other better.

Anna is a firecracker: a gatherer, educator, writer — and most recently, she’s added “Dr Anna Dempsey” to her name.

She’s a graduate of Goldsmiths, University of London’s Children’s Literature and Creative Writing MA programme, and holds a PhD in Creative Writing/Creative Grieving from Bath Spa University and the University of Bristol.

@thegrove.writes is a place where writers gather and stories grow, hosting workshops and courses inspiring writers into their becoming.
