My newest The Guest and the Host song is a holiday song called Joy (All Around the World). This one has a unique origin story. I spent a week in December of 2024 with my friends @kylepholmes and @daytaygo in New York City. We had dreamed up the idea of creating a 90 minute real-time collaborative songwriting experience where an audience of people would join us to write and record a brand new song each night. We called the show the Song Cycle Sessions. A song cycle for those who aren’t familiar is a connected set of songs designed to be experienced together, often telling a story or exploring a common theme. So our idea for our Song Cycle 2024 NYC residency was to write holiday songs each night. Joy (All Around the World) was written on the last night of the show and became a song that I came back to again and again over the following months. For this version of the song, I tweaked some of the lyrics and used the original demo as a template and spent some time in my studio making it feel like a The Guest and the Host song. Some of you may be happy to know that I also included my 2020 Christmas song “It’s Gonna Be Christmas” as the B side on this release. If I keep releasing holiday songs at this pace, I should have a full album collecting of them by 2050. Happy Holidays to you and yours!

I’m constantly experimenting with how I make music. Leaving Los Angeles and the virtual workflow of the pandemic really reshaped how I collaborate. These days I’m comfortable creating from afar, sending and receiving tracks with friends instead of being in the same room. Often for my songs I record most of the arrangement myself and then have friends record overdubs to fill in the gaps. But for At Home, I wanted to flip my process a bit. I started with just vocal and piano, then sent those stems to a few of my favorite collaborators (@colyer and @tydelll) to see where their instincts would take it. It was a nice change in the process to have a bed of music to sift through and play with at the beginning of this process. It forced me out of my instincts.

It’s that time again! Release day! A new song from my @theguestandthehost project. 9 years after writing this with @jonrbryant - this song kept circling around in my head. A handful of my favorite collaborators helped me bring this one to life. More on that soon. #newmusic #athome #singersongwriter

Carmen and I released a new song called “Through The Door” this week. It was written in the midst of our IVF pregnancy journey (she’s currently 19 weeks along). We wrote it to summon a little life our way in hopes of growing our family. Our son Dawson is due 1/1/26. If you listen closely to the intro and the bridge of the song you can hear his sampled heart beat adding a rhythmic pulse. #newmusic #indiemusic #ivf
